Reasons to Refer
Bridge the gap between those who need support and those who can help
The list below is a more comprehensive description of potential reasons to refer individuals to CARE and Support.
Students, faculty, and staff, you are expected to notify LUPD at (434) 592-3911 if you observe or become aware of immediately threatening or concerning behaviors.
CARE Referrals are reviewed Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Referrals outside the Liberty University community email: CARE@liberty.edu.
Academic
- Notable change in classroom behavior (e.g., increased frustration, ranting, apathy, depressed mood, decline in participation, etc.)
- Uncharacteristically poor academic performance
- Sudden increase in incomplete and missing assignments or exams
- Cumulative and/or consecutive unexplained absences from class
- Correspondence or assignments that convey clear intentions to harm self or others
Emotional/Mental
- Vague or specific threats to others
- Written or verbal expressions of self-harm, suicide, death, dying, or hopelessness
- Mental health hospitalization
- Overly aggressive behavior toward others
- Overreaction to circumstances
- Behaviors that appear odd, paranoid, or delusional or convey visual or auditory hallucinations
- Substance abuse
- Disengaged behavior
- Apparent inability to appropriately regulate emotions (e.g., anxiety, fear, frustration, sadness, etc.)
- Traumatic or grievous event (e.g., accident, death in the family, abuse, etc.)
Physical
- Notable change in behavior or appearance (e.g., lethargy, hygienic concerns, rapid weight loss or gain, significant change in diet, etc.)
- Deterioration in living conditions
- Threats or overly aggressive behavior toward others
- Self-injurious behaviors
- Substance abuse or impaired functioning
Spiritual
- Crisis of faith
- Loss or grief
- Ongoing medical need
- Medical hospitalization
- Benevolence need
