Scaremare: Spreading the Gospel this Spooky Season

Oct 20, 2022 • Victoria V.

Spreading the Gospel does not always have to look traditional.

For the past 50 years, Liberty University has preached the Gospel to thousands of people using the scary reality of life after death without Jesus. Scaremare is a 40-minute haunted house that takes visitors on a journey through the dark woods all the way to the House of Death. Guests are faced with creepy clowns, terrifying chainsaw maniacs, and screaming insane asylum victims that enact true fear during this Halloween season.

Even though a lot of people love the thrill of being scared, Scaremare has a different mission for its haunted house. The goal during the three weekends in October is to confront people with the reality of life after death. Without faith in Jesus Christ, humanity is subjected to suffer in Hell forever — this is a future we should hope to avoid. Hell is not a fun place where people can do whatever they want; it is a real place full of suffering, fear, and hopelessness.

After each group finishes the scary elements of the night, volunteers share the Gospel with the guests. Throughout the 50 years of Scaremare, over 26,000 people have made the decision to confront death with the power of Jesus Christ. This unique opportunity exemplifies 1 Corinthians 10:31 to show that even Halloween can be used to promote biblical teachings.
Scaremare had to close its doors from 2020-22 due to COVID-19, but now it’s back, stronger and more realistic than ever. Grab a group of friends and experience Scaremare together this month!
