College Life Beyond the Classroom: How To Spend Time

Nov 5, 2020 • Rachel F.

Studies show that 95% of learning takes place outside the classroom. When you think of college, you think classes and academics but there is so much more to it than that. College is a time to grow, become more independent, and, of course, have fun! One of my favorite things about being a student at Liberty University is that there is so much to do outside the classroom — both on campus and off campus. Here are five different ways you can spend your time outside the classroom when you’re a student here!

  1. Spend Time Outdoors

When you attend Liberty, you’ll be surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains and trails you’ll ever see. Hiking the trails within the Liberty Mountain Trail System is the perfect way to spend your Saturday — there are so many hidden gems such as Lake Trail and Split Decision. Some favorite local hikes recommended by students include Sharp Top and Devil’s Marbleyard. In addition to all of the mountains and trails, you can also hang out at Hydaway Outdoor Center where you can swim, kayak, fish, and so much more!

  1. Explore Downtown Lynchburg

What better way to spend your free time than supporting the community that surrounds Liberty! From shopping to dining to entertainment, there is lots to see and do in downtown. Exploring all that Lynchburg has to offer has always been one of my favorite things to do as a student.

  1. Attend Student Events

There are lots of events for college students happening around campus throughout the semester you don’t want to miss! Events on campus include open mic nights, concerts, workshops, movie nights, and so much more. I love that Liberty hosts a variety of events so there’s something for everyone!

  1. Join a Club or Intramural Sports

There are lots of reasons to join a club in college, including that it’s a great way to get involved on campus and make new friends. There are so many clubs that cover different topics like writing, politics, robotics, etc. You can also join one of the 20+ intramural sports offered at Liberty. Intramurals are recreational sport leagues for team and individual sports. They are a great way to stay active and be a part of a team and community!

  1. Attend Sporting Events

Show your school spirit at the different college sports games throughout the school year! There are so many different games to attend with football in the fall, basketball in the spring, and so many others! A student favorite is always Midnight Madness where sports teams compete at midnight!
