40 Days of Praying and Fasting

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

Do we need to humble ourselves before God? Yes.

Do we need to pray more? Yes.

Do we as Christians need to seek God more? The answer is yes.

Do we need to turn from any wicked ways in our lives? The answer is yes.

Do we need to hear God from heaven? Yes.

Does our land need healing today? I believe the answer is a unanimous yes.

Why fasting? In the Bible, we read much about fasting. Jesus fasted.

Fasting causes us to focus on and seek God more.

Our team from the Office of Spiritual Development has launched a 40-day season of praying and fasting. If you go to the Spiritual Disciplines webpage, you will find they have outlined options on ways to fast. Some will want to fast by going without food — maybe for a day, maybe for a week or longer, if your health permits. Other options are to go without potential distractions in your life — social media, television, or anything else that may remove your focus from God.

What healing do you need? Healing for a hurt in your life, healing for your family, healing for your organization, healing for your country?

Then this 40-day time of praying and fasting — seeking God’s face more — will help bring about healing.

As the president emeritus of this wonderful university, I have been impressed with the desire of our faculty and students to seek God more.

On Wednesday night, students met to worship, pray, and learn how to seek God more.

This 40-day season of praying and fasting is designed to help them add fasting to their prayer life. It was not intentional that this season of prayer and fasting would end just before our nation has an election, but since we need to humble ourselves before God more — to pray more, to seek God more, to turn from any wicked ways in our lives, to hear God more, and to pray for God’s healing — we will also be praying for the healing of our nation.

I want to encourage all of the Liberty community to join me in this time of praying and fasting.
