Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Graduate Certificate in Nutrition?
If you already have a bachelor’s degree and are looking at your options to change careers, a certificate can be an important step to give you the training you need. While a full master’s degree will provide a complete course of study, a certificate can fill in knowledge and skill gaps in your current career or help you build on your current skill set to change to a different career.
Liberty University’s online Graduate Certificate in Nutrition is a focused track of 5 courses designed to quickly give you the specific, advanced content you need. With this certificate, you can pursue new career opportunities while also opening the door to later transferring these courses to a complete master’s degree in nutrition.
What can I do with a graduate certificate in nutrition?
Liberty University’s certificate programs are designed as a way for you to retool your current skill set to change careers or improve your opportunities in your current work. If you have a bachelor’s in a health sciences field, then you may need advanced graduate health courses for advancement, or you may have discovered a new passion in nutrition that you need new skills to pursue.
Your new graduate courses in nutrition can build on your previous experience and credentials, or help you to enter the field for the first time with entry-level positions. You may also be working in a field related to nutrition and need to have some expertise in order to do your job better. Examples of these roles are insurance brokers, healthcare benefits managers, and human resource managers.
Health educators, nutrition coaches, and sports nutrition specialists also benefit from graduate courses in nutrition. Wherever advanced skills in food and nutritional studies are essential for success, you can use your graduate certificate in nutrition.
If you earn a Graduate Certificate in Nutrition, you could also move on to a Master of Public Health – Nutrition and transfer in all 5 of your courses. That path would allow you to start toward your career goals with a solid new credential while you gain additional training in your full master’s program.
How long does it take to get a certificate in nutrition?
Liberty University’s online nutrition courses are designed in 8-week sub-terms, allowing you to focus on fewer classes at once while still maintaining a full-time load. With this format, you can complete the 5 courses in Liberty’s online Graduate Certificate in Nutrition program in as little as 15 credit hours. If you transferred these courses into Liberty’s Master of Public Health — Nutrition, you could complete your master’s degree quicker using the obtained credit hours!
Can I become a nutritionist or dietitian with an online certificate in nutrition?
While you can use advanced training in nutrition to help people make healthier decisions and improve their eating habits, there are additional steps to becoming a dietitian or nutritionist. To become a registered dietician or a certified nutritionist, you will need to meet your state’s specific educational and testing requirements.
While a graduate certificate in nutrition can help you meet education content requirements, this program is not designed by itself to complete those needs and does not include any clinical elements. You may, for example, need to have additional content or other courses that are not covered by our graduate certificate alone or must have recorded clinical hours. Please see your state’s Department of Health website for information about the specific requirements you need to meet in order to become a registered dietician or certified nutritionist.
