WMUS 637 Technology and Media for Worship

In this course, students receive instruction on the foundational skills required for technical production in a contemporary worship context. An emphasis is placed on servant leadership, effective communication, and technical understanding. Current best practices and equipment will be covered for disciplines including media networking, stage lighting, live production video systems, broadcast and streaming, and other aspects of live event production for worship.

Worship practitioners practice their craft in a world where technology has permeated every corner of their lives, and the church building is no different. They must be conversant with all of the major technology categories that are being used weekly to conduct church services, and understand how to interact with each of these disciplines. This course will equip worship leaders to effectively and intelligently lead and interact with technical teams in whatever church context they find themselves.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be a minimum of 200 words.

The student will install software required for the course and ensure proper functionality before proceeding with bulk of the course. The student will take a screenshot of each installed software, gather all of the screenshots, and submit them for this assignment. There should be 5 total screenshots, all properly named according to the instruction document.

Student will develop a service plan in Planning Center, including adding songs and people, creating teams, creating a service flow, and sending out invites.

The student will build and store lighting cues using the grandMA 3 onPC lighting console using a supplied console show file.

The student will build a service playlist in ProPresenter to include worship lyrics and sermon scripture slides.

The student will create a short promotional video for a fictional church using the knowledge he/she has gained about video production.

The student will log his/her sound pressure level (SPL) exposure in a variety of environments, submit the logs, and provide commentary on his/her experience. In a 500-word (minimum) essay, written in Turabian formatting, the student will tell of his/her experience conducting this research.

The student will create a short personal live stream using OBS Studio software that will include video, audio, and graphics.

The student will demonstrate his/her knowledge with quizzes on a variety of topics, including stage lighting, video displays, sound reinforcement, and computer networking.
