SOCI 201 Social Problems
Course Description
A study of social dilemmas such as crime, pollution, war, poverty, drug addiction, and racial discrimination. Course content is both theoretical and practical.

Rationale
Social problems will be analyzed from various sociological perspectives to better understand their cause and consequences. These issues will also be explored from a biblical worldview, in order to help the student develop a better understanding of the complexities of the human experience, and better equip him or her to respond in Christian love.

Discussions (3)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, there will be 3 Discussions in this course. Each initial thread must meet a 350 word-count requirement and include 2 scholarly citations in current APA format. Both replies must meet a 250 word-count requirement and include 1 scholarly citation in current APA format. Initial threads and replies will be supported using scripture where appropriate. Essay Assignment
Each student will write an 800-1,000 word essay which will include a minimum of 2 primary resources using APA citations. A title page, body of content for essay, and reference page will be included. This assignment aligns with the following FSLOs: Social and Scientific Inquiry 2, 3, 4. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
Article Exploration Assignment
Each student will select an article from the list provided. The student will read the article, identifying information by highlighting the text and labeling it with a comment bubble. The student will write a brief reaction essay which will consist of 250-400 words in current APA format. This assignment aligns with the following FSLOs: Social and Scientific Inquiry 1, 3. (CLO: A, C, D)
Observation Assignment
Each student will choose one observation from the instruction page and conduct an observation only assignment. This study will be 100% achievable via observation only, with no interaction between you and the participants. This assignment aligns with the following FSLOs: Social and Scientific Inquiry 1, 2. (CLO: A, C)
Article Narrative Power Point Assignment
The student will select one journal article from the online databases at the Jerry Falwell Library. The article selected will follow a social problem which has been discussed in class. The student will create a PowerPoint presentation which will include at least 8 to 10 slides. The student will include a recorded voice narration to follow the slide presentation. All supportive facts will be reported accurately or paraphrased, and appropriately cited in current APA format. This assignment aligns with the following FSLOs: Social and Scientific Inquiry 1. (CLO: A)
This quiz will assess the student’s understanding of basic concepts related to research, theories, and worldview. The student will answer 10 questions (true and false or multiple choice). The student may consult the Research Overview Presentation at any time during the quiz. This assignment aligns with the following FSLOs: Social and Scientific Inquiry 1, 3. (CLO: E)
Quizzes (8)
Quizzes will be taken for each module/week. The quizzes are comprised of 25 multiple-choice questions that cover information from the course materials. The quizzes are open-book, open-notes, and have a time limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
