The study of human development is the study of sequential and predictable patterns of change. By studying child psychology, the student will be prepared to recognize and respond to physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes in a person through middle childhood. The course is designed to provide understanding, awareness, and scholarly opportunity to explore and react to typical and abnormal characteristics of child psychology in various contexts.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 400 words, include citations from 2 different scholarly references, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words and include at least 1 citation from 1 scholarly reference. Any sources cited must be in APA format. Acceptable sources include the textbook and journal article references (published within the last 5 years). Journal Article Summary Assignment

The student will choose a peer-reviewed journal article to review that is related to the topic of childhood resilience. The chosen journal article must be a primary source and published within the last 5 years. The student will use a provided template to write an article summary discussing the purpose of the research conducted, the research question, methodology, significance of the results, and any limitations or directions for future research. The article summary should be 2-3 pages and in current APA format. (CLOs: B, C)

Podcast Assignment

The student will develop a 5-10 minute media or voice recording presentation on a developmental theory. This presentation should teach listeners about the chosen developmental theory as a new or unfamiliar concept. The information presented should be taken from at least 3 academic or scholarly references. (CLOs: A, C, D)

Child Observation Paper Assignment

The student will write a 2-3-page paper discussing developmental stage and observations related to major developmental areas following a 30-minute observation of a child. This paper must be in current APA format. (CLOs: A, B, C, D)

Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a 10-12-page research paper in current APA format discussing a childhood developmental disorder. The paper must include a thorough discussion of 3 research-based treatments or interventions and 1 local treatment or resource. The paper must have a reference page of at least 10 peer-reviewed journal articles. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E)

Quizzes (2)

There will be 2 quizzes in this course which will cover the Textbook material. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and include 6 essay questions. The purpose of the quizzes are to help the student master and synthesize the class material. Each quiz has a time limit of 2 hours and 45 minutes. (CLOs: A, B, C, E)
