Rationale
This course requires students to complete a research concept paper, consisting of a problem statement, literature review, research question, and research design. This is designed to lay the foundation for the student’s dissertation.

Course Requirements Checklist
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
The student will complete a quiz affirming that he or she has access to the HSOG Doctoral Community Canvas page, and that he or she agrees to be bound to all policies contained therein. This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 2 true/false and short answer questions, and have no time limit.
The student will revise and resubmit the Research Plan Review Form they submitted prior to entering the 885: Research Concept course.
The student will complete the official Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training certification. The student will upload a pdf of his or her completion certificate.
Prior to completing a draft of Chapter 2: Literature Review, students will prepare a partial draft of that chapter that addresses the theoretical literature in their chosen academic discipline and the relevance of this literature to the student’s proposed project.
Prior to submitting a complete draft of Chapter 3, students will prepare a revised research question, specifying their dependent variable.
Prior to submitting a draft of Chapter 3, students will explain and justify their research design.
Student will submit full drafts of Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and Chapter 3. These drafts will rely on the current template appropriate for the student’s project format (i.e. capstone or dissertation) as posted in the Helms School of Government Doctoral Community
After submitting separate drafts of Chapters 1, 2, and 3, students will be expected to revise and resubmit all chapters together into a single draft of their Research Concept paper or research prospectus.
The student will give an oral presentation of his or her Concept Paper: Final Assignment. The Oral Presentation must be between 15-20 minutes long and cover all major points of the Concept Paper: Final Assignment.
