Rationale
This course covers advanced skills in marriage and family counseling. The purpose of the course is to present more in-depth concepts and philosophies of marriage and family counseling for pastoral counselors. This course will also teach advanced skills and techniques necessary when counseling marriages and families.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. Each thread must utilize at least 4 scholarly references. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words and supported with no less than 2 scholarly references. The Bible must be used as one of the required references. The student must use current APA or Turabian format, using the style that corresponds to the student’s degree program.
4MAT Review Assignment
The student will complete a 4MAT Review that covers the assigned chapters of the Köstenberger and Jones textbook. The assignment must include a summary, concrete reflection, critique, and application. The assignment must conform to the following length requirements for each section and must not exceed 5 pages total of content: At least: 350 words (summary), 250 words (concrete reflection), 250 words (critique), and 400 words (application). The student must use current APA or Turabian format, using the style that corresponds to the student’s degree program. The student must cite the course textbook and any other sources used in the current style guide for their degree program.
Marriage Counseling Plan Assignment
The student will watch the movie Fireproof and develop a 3–5-page (not to exceed 5 pages) marriage counseling plan for the married couple in the movie. The plan must incorporate elements learned from both the textbook readings and course presentations and must reflect a solid integration of a Christian worldview. The marriage counseling plan must include the following elements: a description of the problem, goals for counseling, short-term objectives, intervention, and discussion of Christian worldview. The student will utilize SMART goals to create 3-5 specific counseling goals for the married couple in the movie. Each goal must have at least 3 short-term objectives. Each short-term objective must include at least 2 interventions. The student must utilize the provided structure for the assignment. The student must use current APA or Turabian format, using the style that corresponds to the student’s degree program. Any sources used must be cited in the current style guide for the student’s degree program.
Book Critique Assignment
The student will write a 5-page book critique that focuses on the counseling approach presented in the Sells and Yarhouse textbook. The paper must include at least 3 scholarly references. The assignment must include a cover page, reference page, and must not exceed 5 pages of content. The student must utilize headings to address the following areas: summary of the text, its potential use for Christian marital counseling, and a critique of the text. The student must discuss at least 1 strength and 1 weakness in their critique of the text. The student must use current APA or Turabian format, using the style that corresponds to the student’s degree program. Any sources used must be cited in the current style guide for the student’s degree program.
Family Counseling Plan Assignment
The student will read the provided case study and will develop a 5-page (not to exceed 5 pages) family counseling plan for the family in the case study. The plan must incorporate elements learned from both the textbook readings and course presentations and must reflect a solid integration of a Christian worldview with at least 1 biblical citation included. The assignment must include the following elements: a description of the problem, goals for counseling, short-term objectives, interventions, and an explanation of incorporating biblical references. The student will create 3-5 SMART goals for the couple from the case study. The student will also include at least 3 short-term objectives for each SMART goal and at least 2 interventions per each short-term objective. The student must utilize the provided structure and headings. The student must use current APA or Turabian format, using the style that corresponds to the student’s degree program. Any sources used must be cited in the current style guide for the student’s degree program.
