PACO 506 Integration of Psychology and Theology

This course introduces students to the process of pastoral counseling with a variety of religious clients, particularly religious clients who would define themselves as evangelical Christians. The course provides a systematic overview of Christian doctrines, a discussion of various theological viewpoints regarding those doctrines, and an examination of how psychological and theological concepts relate to each other.

In order to practice Christian counseling, the professional counselor must be able to articulate a Christian worldview and understand the way in which his or her worldview informs counseling theory and practice. Integration of Psychology and Theology provides the student with an overview of integration models as a theoretical and practical foundation for faith-based counseling.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be at least 300 words, include at least two different academic references, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, students will reply to two classmates’ threads. The replies must be at least 200 words and include at least one academic reference. 4-MAT Book Review Assignments (2)

The student will write a 4-MAT Book Review for two of the required textbooks for this course. The first 4-MAT Book Review will cover the Moes and Riek textbook, and the second 4-MAT Book Review will cover the Keller textbook. Each Review must be 3-5 pages in length (excluding title and reference pages). Use of correct grammar and spelling are required. In text citations and all references must utilize the correct writing format for the student’s degree program. Each Review will be submitted via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. (CLOs: B – F)

Movie Review Assignments (2)

The student will select two movies from the pre-approved list in above, watch the movies, and write Reviews from the perspective of a pastoral counselor who identifies an issue or conflict that one or more characters in the movie are facing. The student must discuss how he or she would address the chosen issue(s) or conflict(s) in a pastoral counseling setting. Each Review must be 3-5 pages (excluding title and reference pages). Use of correct grammar and spelling are required. In text citations and all references must utilize the correct writing format for the student’s degree program. Each Review will be submitted via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. (CLOs: A – F)

Integration of Psychology and Theology Assignment

The student will write an essay incorporating concepts they have learned throughout the course, specifically regarding the integration of psychology and theology in the pastoral counseling setting. The student must include at least four different academic sources (texts, books, journal articles, video lectures, etc.) in addition to at least five scriptural references. The Essay must be 4-5 pages in length (excluding title and reference pages). Use of correct grammar and spelling are required. In text citations and all references must utilize the correct writing format for the student’s degree program. The essay will be submitted via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. (CLOs: A – F)
