Course Description
Bibliographic research in the field of music education. Students will identify, access, evaluate, and interpret music education resources and materials in preparation for performing research on music education topics.

Rationale
This course is intended to take the student through the process of research in preparation for developing the internship and master’s thesis or project design. It is a prerequisite to completing the Internship and the Master’s Thesis, and culminates in the preliminary research proposal.

Discussions (6)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 6 Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 150-300 words. The student must then post 2 replies of at least 100-200 words. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in Turabian format. Each reply must incorporate at least 1 scholarly citation(s) in Turabian format. Acceptable sources include online sources, journals, magazines, websites, the course text, the Bible, etc.
Article Review and Analysis Assignment
This assignment gives the student the opportunity to actively apply the research terminologies and concepts he/she has learned, demonstrating his/her ability to apply these ideas to the review and analysis of published articles.
Research Terminology Assignment
This assignment gives the student the opportunity to explore research terminologies and demonstrate his/her comprehension of these concepts. This will serve to solidify student comprehension of these ideas as he/she moves through this course and onward to the final project.
Annotated Bibliography Assignment
The student will begin by reading both the course text and a quantitative journal article. Then, the student will compile an Annotated Bibliography as a beginning exploration of the literature for this course. This assignment must include at least 10 scholarly sources and be at least 5 pages long.
Research Training Course Assignment
The student will complete the Research Training Course Assignment written course through the National Institutes of Health, Office of Extramural Research. This course replaces an earlier training program run by the National Institutes of Health. The course will take about 3-5 hours to complete. The student will begin by reading and studying the information provided in the Protecting Human Research Participants pdf and then take the assessment using the link provided. Upon completion of the assessment, the student will submit their certificate in Canvas.
Scavenger Hunt Assignment
The student will be given an opportunity to go on a Scavenger Hunt in order to put into practice his/her conceptual awareness of research process and methodology. The student will read through and analyze both a formal thesis research project and a curriculum project to identify and discuss the elements that he/she has learned and articulated.
Editing/Critique Assignment
The student will download the completed draft of an imaginary student’s paper from Canvas for the purpose of engaging in an editing/review exercise.
In this assignment, the student will compose 5 possible research questions pertaining to the developing area of interest that emerged during the research experiences in the course. The assignment requires a formal introduction and explanation of the planned organization and research design, as reflected in the Creswell text, watch items, and other materials reviewed in the course. The submission must be 2-3 pages in length and align with current Turabian formatting.
Final Paper Assignment
The student will be writing a 5-7 page Final Paper Assignment (a Research Prospectus) as the final project for this course. The student must include at least 10 scholarly sources on the topic of his/her choice relating to music education.
