This course is an introduction to phonetics, the study of how human speech sounds are made and heard. In this course, the student will learn about how speech sounds are produced in the vocal tract and how they are perceived, and the student will be given an introduction to phonetics research. The student will also learn how phonetics research is used in other subfields of linguistics.

Discussions (8)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. These discussions are designed to help the student evaluate topics in linguistics. Each thread must be 100-150 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge by citing at least 1 scholarly citation in APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 100 words and add substantially to the conversation.

Homework Assignments (7)

Seven sets of Homework Assignments covering different linguistic concepts are assigned throughout the course. The student will study the topics of Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Introduction to Phonetics, Transcription and Manner of Articulation, Phonology, and Syllabification.

Quizzes (10)

The student will have 10 weekly quizzes in this course. Each quiz will cover Learn material from the assigned module and allow for one attempt. The student will answer 11 to 15 multiple-choice, true/false, either/or, fill-in-the-blank, and/or multiple-answer questions in 30 to 45 minutes per quiz. Additionally, there will be a Quiz: Midterm Concept Review Exam covering material from the first half of the course. This quiz allows 1 attempt with a 3-hour time limit and contains 30 multiple-choice, true/false, matching, short-answer, and fill-in-the-blank questions. Finally, there is a Quiz: Final Concept Review Exam covering materials from the last half of the course. This 20-question multiple-choice, matching, short-answer, and fill-in-the-blank quiz is limited to 2 hours and allows 1 attempt.
