Rationale
This course introduces the theoretical study of language, with emphasis on the development of an analytical and critical attitude toward language as an important but often subconscious cognitive ability. The course presents the terminologies and techniques needed for the analysis and description of linguistic structures.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must between 100-150 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge, and incorporate 1 citation in current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Seven sets of homework problems will be assigned throughout this course. Each homework assignment has specific instructions and expectations. Some are longer than others. The student should thus plan according to each Module: Week. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 to 15 multiple-choice, true/false, matching, multiple answer, and/or fill-in-the-blank questions, and will have a specified time limit. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Quiz: Exams (2)
The student will have a Midterm Concept Review and a Final Concept Review in the form of Quiz: Exams. The student will have 3 hours to answer 30 questions for the midterm and 2 hours to answer 20 questions for the final. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
