Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions (3)

The student will complete three Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 450 words. The student must then post two replies of at least 200 words. Each thread and reply must include at least 1 scholarly citation. Each reply must incorporate constructive feedback to assist peers with practicum objectives and project formation. Any sources cited must follow APA format. Acceptable sources include government websites, scholarly articles, and the Bible. (CLO: C, D)

Resume Assignment

A resume is the first step to ensuring you are prepared to make yourself marketable for leadership positions and to seek a practicum placement. You will submit a resume or curriculum vitae that is appropriate for the experience you are seeking. Your resume should not include any photos of yourself. While not required you are also encouraged to develop a virtual portfolio and a professional virtual presence.

The student will create a timeline related to when they expect to complete each step of the project process along with their goals for the semester. The purpose of this assignment is to assist the student with time management. A list of one goal with three to five objectives related to the dissertation process and a visual display of tasks related to the dissertation process along with when those tasks are expected to be completed is required. (CLO: F)

In preparation for the applied research project, the student will select 15 recent peer-reviewed articles from the past 3 years to generate a bibliography using current APA format. The student will read each article and write a 150 – 200 word synopsis/critique of the article included as an annotation in the bibliography.

Quiz: Practicum Site Submission and Approval

The student will find a practicum site and site supervisor to oversee the practicum experience. The practicum experience requires 225 hours of supervised work. (CLO: B)

The overview of the planned applied doctoral research project should include the following:

  • Chapter One: Introduction
  • Chapter Two: Literature Review
  • Chapter Three: Procedures

The student will use the Applied Doctoral Research Project Overview Template document to write Chapters 1-3.

Quiz: Advisory Committee Formation

The doctoral research project is an independent research project patterned after a Ph.D. dissertation model. The student will form an advisory committee with a lead advisor (the chair), from LU faculty. There is a proposal phase and a research phase, culminating in an oral defense of the project and a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Unlike a dissertation, the student can design and develop a course from start to finish, conduct a quality improvement program and implement it, use secondary data, a regional population, or conduct and analyze a health promotion program. It is possible to complete the project in two semesters if the quality is acceptable. It is not unusual for a student to need additional semesters to complete the project. This is acceptable as long as the student is making sufficient progress. The student can begin the project while completing the practicum experience. The student picks their topic. The student should work on something that meets their career needs. The committee will help the student define the topic. A list of potential faculty members that can be contacted regarding the project can be found in the Canvas SHS Doctoral Community. If the student is unable to find three advisory committee members, the doctoral support team will assist. A brief summary of the planned project and practicum experience should accompany the request for committee members. (CLO: A)

Quiz: CITI Training

The student will access the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative website and correctly answer at least 80% of the questions for each module. Once training is complete, the student will submit a copy of the PDF report showing the completed coursework. Please note that the IRB will not approve research proposals until CITI Training has been completed. (CLO: E)
