GOVT 321 American Judicial System

This course provides an overview of the basic structure of the American court system while exploring the impact of the courts and examining the influence of and intersection with the legislative and executive branches of government.

This course is an essential component of the government, political science, and policy concentrations in the Helms School of Government. A basic knowledge of the American judicial systems is essential in order to equip the student with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills needed for conducting the business of government, politics, policy making, public administration, public safety, and military service. The focus on American courts is designed to build upon the constitutional principles taught in GOVT 200 and GOVT 220.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview. 

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 300-350 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly sources/citations in APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 150-200 words and must incorporate at least 1 scholarly source/citation in APA format. (CLO: B, C, D, E) 

The student will write a 400-450 word essay paper in current APA format that focuses on (1) Separation of Powers, (2) Judicial Performance, and (3) Civil Court System. Each essay must include at least 1 reference in addition to the course textbook and the Bible. (CLO: A, C, E)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple choice questions, and have a 30 minute time limit.
