FIRE 390 Fire Investigation and Analysis

This course examines the technical, investigative, legal, and social aspects of arson, including principles of incendiary fire analysis and detection, environmental and psychological factors of arson, legal considerations, intervention, and mitigation strategies. This course prepares the student to recognize and apply best practices in the investigation of fires, conduct the origin and cause determination procedures and practices necessary to ascertain if the fire was accidental or incendiary, prepare the investigative reports necessary to document such analysis and apply the findings and knowledge acquired through such efforts to reduce the consequence of both accidental and intentional fires.

The purpose of the course is to equip the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively conduct a fire investigation that determines the origin and cause of fires. The course is a foundational element of the Fire Science degree and helps each student gain an understanding of fire investigation principles, the role of the first responder in fire investigations, fire scene awareness, evidence identification, preservation techniques, and scientific management.

The goal of this assignment is to provide the student with a practical application in using scientific management techniques learned from the Learn items from the assigned Module: Week. This assignment will help the student to apply scientific management principles to fire investigation so he or she can enhance his or her analytical and problem-solving skills, and improve his or her understanding of the importance of systematic data collection, hypothesis testing, and evidence-based conclusions in fire investigations.

The student will write a 2—3-page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on managing the fire investigation unit or intervention and mitigation strategies for combating arson. The paper must include at least 2 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. (CLO: A, E)
