This doctoral level course will emphasize theoretical foundations and practical applications for the development of training programs aimed to improve sport performance. Advanced strategies for developing, implementing, and assessing strength and conditioning programs will be examined.

Rationale
The purpose of this course is to provide doctoral students with a thorough understanding of the responsibilities of a strength and conditioning coach specifically as they relate to assessment, program design, and athlete monitoring. This course will teach students how to design and implement strength and conditioning programs for strength and power, team sport, and endurance athletes. Special attention will be placed on long-term planning and evaluation of athletes as practiced in the field. This advanced course will prepare doctoral students in the Exercise and Sport Science cognate for a career in collegiate and high performance sport.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each of the 2 assigned Discussions. Each thread must be no less than 350 words, no more than 700 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge and include 1 citation in current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be no less than 200 words, no more than 600 words, and include 1 citation in current APA format.
The student will complete an article review based on an original research article from a sport science journal. The article must be no less than 3 and no more than 5 pages, discuss the study’s background (e.g., reasons for study, subjects utilized, brief methods, etc.), summarize the significance of the student’s findings, and write 1–2 paragraphs detailing how this article is related to the module topic.
This is a 2-part assignment each student will complete over the duration of the course. In the first assignment, the student will be responsible for designing the blueprint for their annual training plan in an Excel document along with providing a written rationale explaining the training plan in a Word document. In the second assignment, the student will need to include programming for strength training and conditioning sessions within the annual training plan along with a written rationale explaining the training program in a Word document.
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules, be open-book/open-notes, and contain 40 multiple-choice and 2 essay questions. The student will have 2 hours to complete each quiz.
