Rationale
The purpose of this lab is to provide students in the field of Exercise Science a laboratory experience demonstrating the response of the body’s physiological systems to exercise in different conditions. This course is also intended to help students master laboratory techniques involved in the collection of exercise data.
Course Assignment
Journal Article Review Presentation
The students, in a group of three-four, will complete a 16-20min journal article review presentation based upon one “original” research journal article from a student search of research studies dealing with assessment tests highly associated with Exercise Physiology. The article must have a strong association with Exercise Physiology. The presentation must discuss the study’s background (ie. reasons for study and brief review of literature) = Introduction, subjects utilized and procedures = Methodology, data analysis = Results, summary of significance of findings = Discussion, concluding thoughts = Conclusion, and suggestions for future research. Each student group must submit a copy of their article to the course professor two days prior to the presentation date on the last day of class. Note, the presentations will resemble an Oral Free Communication as seen at various regional and national ACSM conferences.
Case Study Discussion Group
Students, in a group of three or four, will participate in a case study group activity where various case study scenarios will be given verbally to the students by the course professor and each group will have a few minutes to discuss an answer. Then, a large group discussion will occur where each group will build upon one another’s answers. This process will occur for approximately 4-7 case studies. Points will be deducted for lack of participation or answers that are gravely incorrect. The case study discussion group activity will occur on Thursday of their lab week (ie. 2nd last day of class) so that the content covered for the course is nearly finished.
Lab Participation
All students are expected to heavily participate in each laboratory activity either as a lab technician or subject. Points will be deducted if students do not physically participate in enough laboratory activities either as a lab technician or subject. To reiterate, students MUST physically participate in all lab activities and points may be deducted from the lab participation grade for voluntary non-participation unless excluded by professor for medical reasons!
Lab Homework Assignments (12)
There will be twelve lab homework assignments to be completed by the students during the course. All lab assignments must be handed in, directly to the course professor, as one main stapled packet by 2pm on the last day of class (ie. Friday of the intensive lab week, 2021). Note: outside class time activities will be assigned.
