This course is designed to help the student develop an understanding of how anthropology has traditionally been used in the theory and practice of ethnomusicology. It will equip the student with the basic understanding of how anthropological methods can be utilized in the practice of Christian ethnomusicology.

Discussions (8)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 8 Discussions in this course. Discussions will be graded by quality, frequency, and timeliness. Each Discussion is split into threads and replies. The threads and replies must consist of well-planned postings. Threads must be at least 350 words in length, and replies must be at least 150 words in length. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in current Turabian format. Each reply must incorporate at least 1 scholarly citation in current Turabian format. Acceptable sources include textbooks, video presentations, scholarly articles and journals, the Bible, and the like. 

Reflection Paper Assignments (3)

The student will write 3 Reflection Papers based on assigned readings in the course. Each paper will be 1,250 words or 4–5 pages in length and will be double-spaced, excluding the title page and bibliography. In addition, Reflection Papers should contain correct citations. The Reflection Papers should be written in formal style, following current Turabian format.

Final Paper: Topic Submission Assignment

The student will submit a preliminary choice for a topic. The student will provide the name of the worship community, its location, and how the student will gain entrance into that worship community for the purposes of this project and describe an initial plan to address the chosen issue of contextualization. The student must include at least 4 scholarly sources (acceptable sources include textbooks, scholarly articles published within the last five years, the Bible, etc.) cited in current Turabian format.

Final Paper: Outline and Bibliography Assignment

The student will complete a 1–2-page outline. In addition to the outline, the student will include a bibliography that lists at least 10 scholarly sources (acceptable sources include textbooks, scholarly articles published within the last five years, The Bible, etc.). Current Turabian format must be used.

Final Paper Assignment

The Final Paper Assignment will be written on a topic of the student’s choice. The topic should be related to the study of anthropology of music. The length of the paper should be 15-20 pages, excluding title page and bibliography. The paper should make use of current Turabian formatting.
