EMER 355 Legal, Political, and Regulatory Environment of EMS
Course Description
This is an upper-level baccalaureate course for students interested in the legal, political, and regulatory environment of EMS. This course introduces the EMS professional to the legal aspects of Emergency Medical Services. Students explore issues in malpractice, consent, and refusal treatment, OSHA, employment issues, and risk management. EMS students gain insights into the legal liabilities of Emergency Medical Services.

Rationale
The future of emergency medical services organizations is dependent on the legal considerations that impact day to day operations. To become a well-qualified leader within the emergency medical services, one must not only understand the legal issues associated with the emergency service responsibilities but must also understand the basic principles of implementation and how to apply those principles in an ethical manner throughout one’s career.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 8 Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 300 words. The student must then post 2 replies to his/her peers’ posts of at least 200 words.
For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in the current APA format. Each reply must incorporate at least 1 scholarly citation in the current APA format. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include professional journals, scholarly works, and the textbook, in addition to the Bible. For peer posts, each reply must be positive and substantial in nature and not just repeat what the peer has submitted in his/her post.
Using the case study, analyzing the key lessons learned from the situation and proposed remedies. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 – 4 double-spaced pages of content. At least three (3) additional articles should be cited and referenced throughout the paper as appropriate.
Write a persuasive essay by investigating, collecting, and evaluating evidence, and establishing a position on the Records Retention and Confidentiality as presented in your textbook. Select from the following topic: Records Storage, Quality Assurance and Improvement, or Destruction of Medical Records. Be sure to stress the immediate importance of safeguarding records. Finally, include steps for setting up a confidentiality guideline. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 – 5 double-spaced pages of content and cite and reference concepts from the assigned Module: Week required reading, presentations, and additional research, as well as at least three (3) additional articles and the bible. Applying a biblical perspective is important, please be sure to clarify whether the biblical perspective is your opinion or will be used in addressing members and/or other officials.
The student will analyze a current event related to a legal and/or political event in an emergency services administration context. The event must have occurred within the last 2 years. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 – 4 double-spaced pages of content and should include a link to the article and at least three (3) additional articles as part of the reference page.
