EDUC 510 Instructional Strategies for Diverse Learners

An introduction to the teaching profession. Candidates will acquire the basic professional knowledge required to facilitate learning for diverse students. Emphasis will be placed on lesson planning and presentation as well as strategies for providing effective instruction to diverse learners.

The purpose of this introductory course is to provide a foundation of knowledge and skills that will be necessary for success in future education courses that lead to teaching licensure.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the candidate is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words. (CLO: B, C, G) 

Lesson Plan Assignment

Candidates will use the provided template to create a lesson plan for a 15-20 minute mini-lesson. (CLO: A) 

Lesson Plan Presentation Assignment

Lesson Presentation –The MAT candidate will film himself/herself as he/she presents a simulation of the lesson plan completed in Module/Week 2. The candidate will present the lesson as though he/she is teaching the grade level specified in the lesson plan. The mini-lesson presentation must not exceed 20 minutes. (CLO: A) 

Teaching Strategies for Diverse Learners Essay Assignment

The candidate will write a 1,200 word research-based essay in current APA format that focuses on a strategy that can be used to address the needs of diverse learners. The paper must include at least 4 references. (CLO: B, C) 

Understanding Special Education Paper Assignment

The candidate will write a 1,000 word research-paper in current APA format that focuses on the characteristics of students receiving special education, the laws governing special education, service delivery environments for students eligible for special education services, the general education teacher’s role in special education, and Biblical principles that support the use of special education services in schools. (CLO: C, D, E, F)

Technology and Online Learning Paper Assignment

The candidate will write a 1,000 word research-paper in APA format that describes the principles of online learning and online instructional strategies. The ability to use technology as a tool for teaching, learning, research, and communication will be emphasized throughout the paper. (CLO: H) 

Interview Assignment

Using the provided questionnaire, the candidate will interview an individual who has personal or professional experience in the field of special education. The candidate is responsible for locating this person and must not contact the School of Education Field Office. Afterwards, the candidate must write an interview summary of at least 200 words and a conclusion of at least 300 words in current APA format. The summary and conclusion must include citations from at least 1 scholarly journal article and the course textbook. (CLO: D, E)

Evaluation of Video Lesson Assignment

For the Evaluation of Video Lesson assignment, the candidate will view the assigned video of a teacher conducting a lesson and respond to 4 questions, including a biblical worldview application question. Each question response must be at least 200 words and must include at least 1 citation from the textbook, the Bible, and a scholarly journal article. The Evaluation of Video Lesson assignment must follow current APA format and include a title page and reference page. (CLO: A, B, C) 

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover the reading material for the assigned module: week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and contain multiple choice questions. There will be no time limit on these quizzes. (CLO: A, B, D, E, F, G)
