EDUC 398 Field Experience Capstone

An extended supervised field experience targeted to enhance teaching skills in the classroom. *Please note, this course is not part of a program leading to eligibility of a Virginia state teaching license (or license in any other state). Individuals seeking to obtain a state teaching license should contact soelicensure@liberty.edu for recommended course options.

Field experience in specific areas of academic interests is necessary for professional growth and development. This field experience required in this course provides opportunity for the candidate to observe and implement differentiated instruction, classroom management techniques, and other instructional approaches that have been learned and studied throughout his/her degree program. This capstone course does not lead to licensure/certification.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge through at least one in-text citation for each thread and each reply. Biblical integration will be reflected in the discussions as the candidate plans for his or her classroom setup and mini unit development. In addition to the thread, the candidate is required to reply to two other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words. (CLO: D, E)

Field Experience Assignments (3)

1. Placement Verification Assignment

The candidate is required to complete a 45-hour practicum in a private or public school placement that aligns with the candidate’s degree program with a qualified mentor.  A qualified mentor must have at least 3 years of teaching experience and must be certified/licensed in the candidate’s degree field (certification may be state licensure, ACSI, etc.).  All 45 hours must be documented with the same mentor in order to pass this course.  The candidate will submit placement details for instructor approval before the candidate can begin to accumulate hours.  The candidate must review the Liberty University Field Experiences Requesting Procedures. If the candidate needs placement through one of Liberty University School of Education’s field offices, the candidate must submit their request by Wednesday of Module 1: Week 1. (CLO: A, D)

2. Summative Assessment Assignment

The Summative Assessment is an evaluation of the candidate’s overall performance and professionalism in the 45-hour placement.  The assessment is completed by the candidate’s mentor teacher. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

3. Quiz: Field Experience Time Log

The candidate must begin their field placement no later than Module 3: Week 3 of the course to ensure that they are able to earn all 45 hours in the field.  The candidate will track placement hours through Time Log in CORE. The candidate will confirm these tasks have been completed by taking the Field Experience Time Log Quiz. (CLO: A, D)

Quiz: Course Overview

This quiz will review expectations related to the placement parameters. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 true/false questions, and have a 30-minute time limit. (CLO: D, E)

Quiz: Professionalism

This quiz will review aspects of professionalism that must be exemplified during all field experience hours. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 true/false questions, and have a 30-minute time limit. (CLO: D, E)

Professional Portfolio Assignments (3)

1. Quizzes: Professional Portfolio Phase One and Two

Portfolio Phase quizzes evaluate the progress of portfolio development.  Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 5 true/false questions, and have a 30-minute time limit. (CLO: D, E)

2. Professional Portfolio Assignment

The portfolio collects benchmark assignments from the candidate’s program and highlights the candidate’s field experience. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)

Lesson Assignments (5)

1. Objective Statement Assignment

The candidate will meet with the mentor teacher to determine the subject, topic, and standard to be taught for the Lesson Plan assignment.  The candidate will identify these items and write the Objective Statement in alignment with the given focus. (CLO: A, C, D)

2. Lesson Plan Assignment

Using the subject, topic, and standard identified on the Objective Statement, the candidate will write a detailed lesson plan to be taught to PreK-12 students in the assigned placement. Scriptural integration through a character education principle will be developed as part of the lesson plan. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)

3. Lesson Plan Evaluation Assignment

The Lesson Plan Evaluation is an assessment of the candidate’s ability to provide a thorough and appropriate lesson plan for the assigned placement.  The assessment is completed by the candidate’s mentor teacher. (CLO: C, D)

4. Lesson Performance Evaluation Assignment

The candidate will teach his/her lesson in the assigned placement.  The Lesson Plan Evaluation is an assessment for the mentor teacher to observe and critique the candidate’s lesson performance. The assessment is completed by the candidate’s mentor teacher. (CLO: A, B, C)

5. Lesson Reflection Assignment

The candidate will write short answer responses to reflection prompts to review the candidate’s lesson performance. (CLO: D, E)

Quiz: Honor Code

This quiz will evaluate the candidate’s integrity regarding the field experience, mentor document submissions, and course assignments. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain two true/false questions, and have a 30-minute time limit. (CLO: D, E)

Exit Survey Assignment

The candidate will write short answer responses that focus on their reflection on how the program has supported preparation for classroom instruction. (CLO: D, E)

Dispositions Assessment Assignment

The candidate will write short answer responses of at least 3–5 well-developed sentences that focus on their experience in the classroom by identifying how they demonstrated or reflect SCRIP Dispositions: Social Responsibility, Commitment, Reflection, Integrity, and Professionalism. (CLO: D, E)
