The psychological and psychosocial effects of drug addiction and addictive behaviors on individuals, couples, and families are examined. Emphasis is placed on counseling skills and techniques.

Rationale
Addiction, whether to substances or behaviors, is one of the leading causes of disease burden in the world. Counseling caregivers must become knowledgeable about addiction and skillful at working with individuals, families, and communities affected by it. The opportunity for counselors to bring skillful healing and grace to those struggling with addictive issues exists as in few other areas of counseling practice. Addiction and its etiology, treatment, and prevention clearly involve the mind, body, soul, and spirit. This course is designed to equip the student with the resources necessary for providing more effective care for those whose lives have been impacted by addiction.

Discussions (4)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to post 1 initial thread of at least 400 words; in the following week, the student must post 3 replies of at least 200 words each, except in Discussion Thread: 4 – Application Using Motivational Interviewing Concepts the student must post 1 reply of at least 200 words. For each thread, the student must support assertions with at least 1 citation in current APA format. Each reply must also cite at least 1 source. All citations must be in-text. Acceptable sources include the textbooks and journal articles. The student may cite the Bible, but they will need at least 1 of the other sources. An APA reference list is not required unless the student uses materials from outside the course. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
Addictions Case Study Assignments (3)
The student will review an Addiction Case Study: Narrative and develop a conceptualization paper and genogram of the case (Case Conceptualization), analyze and discuss diagnostic considerations (Diagnostic Impressions), and develop evidence-based treatment recommendations (Treatment Plan). While the case studies are not traditional research papers, the student will need to follow the current APA format when doing basic APA formatting of his or her papers. For each assignment, the paper must be between 7-9 pages in length, not including the title and reference pages. (CLO: G)
Quizzes (4)
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50 multiple-choice questions, and have a time limit of 1 hour 30 minutes. (CLO: B, C, D, E, F)
