Course Requirements Checklist
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Discussions (4)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 4 standard Discussions in this course. For three of the discussions, the student will post one thread of at least 400 words. For the Discussion: Community Mental Health, the student will create a PowerPoint presentation as instructed by the prompt instead. Following each discussion thread, the student must post at least one reply of at least 250 words. Each thread must be supported by at least 3 scholarly sources in current APA format. Each of the first replies the student submits needs to be supported by at least 2 scholarly sources in current APA format. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Discussions: Subject Matter Conversations (SMC) (2)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will participate in two (2) Subject Matter Conversations (SMC) discussions within the course that both include a synchronous meeting. If the student is unable to attend the synchronous session, the student will listen to the recording of the session and review the associated material. All students will provide a response to a reflection thread after completing the subject matter conversation. (CLO: A, C, D)
Community Resource Directory Assignment
The student will submit a resource directory for mental health and social service organizations in his/her community. A minimum of twenty service providers must be included. If the student lives in a rural area, they may need to extend the definition of his/her “community” to the next largest area. This resource directory does not need to be in APA format and should be written as if it were given to both community members and other service providers. The name of the organization, a summary of their services, contact information for the organization, and any social media sites for the organization should be provided. This needs to be presented in an organized and professional format. (CLO: C, D)
Annotated Bibliography and APA Citations and References Assignment
The student will search the Jerry Falwell Library and identify 10 peer-reviewed journal articles that focus on mental health needs in a community population (e.g., veterans, homeless, widows, impoverished, etc…). The student will write one paragraph summarizing the contents of each article. The student will practice citing integrated/synthesized material with both narrative and parenthetical citations within the annotation. The student will also practice APA skills of reference formatting. References need to be within the last 7 years.. (CLO: A, B, C)
Community Program Response Paper Assignment
The student will write a 4-6 page (not counting title, abstract, and references) APA-formatted paper developing a Community Program that responds to a population/need in the community (this can be the student’s community or the student can use the Sue et al. or June & Black text to help inform this population). This program needs to focus specifically on one population for which there is a gap in services, an unmet need, or lack of organization/collaboration for existing services. Using the headings below, provide a well-supported (i.e., cite at least 5 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources published within the last 5 years) discussion of the population for which the program will be designed and support for the need. Citations are not needed in the discussion of the program itself. The program needs to be the student’s own creation and needs to be presented in narrative (i.e., not a bulleted list). A biblical worldview needs to be integrated throughout the paper. The paper should demonstrate integration and synthesis of sources; no direct quotes should be present. No Artificial Intelligence should be used in the design of the program or the paper will be automatically graded as 0 and an Academic Integrity report will be filed.
Description of the Population (what are the national statistics for this population as well as the community statistics? What does the literature suggest about the population in general? What are the diversity considerations to address?)
Identification of Need (what is the gap/need? What statistics exist for who is receiving/not receiving the services in the community?)
Program Name (Name the program. Describe services/staff/operations [program]/who is involved, who are stakeholders, when/where/how often meet, what will focus be [coalition]). What are potential challenges and barriers to the success of the program’s services and how will the program address those?)
Conclusion (A conclusion is a discussion of concluding thoughts, not just a summary. Be sure that this is at least 2-3 paragraphs).
(CLO: B, C, D)
Community Advocacy Presentation Assignment
The student will develop an annotated 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation (using the notes feature for each slide) focused on advocacy and social justice. In addition to chapter readings, a minimum of 5 scholarly, peer-reviewed articles (within the last 5 years) must be used to support the discussion. The annotation must be 250 words (all except the title and reference slides) and include citations. The student can choose which community to focus the advocacy discussion around. The sources should be synthesized and integrated throughout the presentation. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Quiz: Self-Report: QAC Subscription
The student will complete this quiz to confirm his/her subscription to the Question & Answer Center (QAC) discussion thread. The quiz will contain 1 multiple choice question, have no time limit, and allow for one attempt.
