It is undeniable that today’s society is saturated with violence. The average child will witness over 200,000 acts of violence on TV by the time he or she turns 18. Around 35% of women and 22% of men who arrive at hospital emergency rooms are there due to domestic violence. While some who experience trauma of this type are able to adequately cope, many are not. Counselors and community workers need to be aware of the effects of trauma on individuals and the ways in which these effects may be treated; this course is intended to address that need.

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussion

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for Discussion: Trauma and Spirituality. The student is required to select a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal article published within the last 10 years on the topic of trauma and spirituality. The student will then address specific questions from the Discussion prompt regarding the integration of trauma and spirituality with a thread of 250 words and two replies of 100 words each. In the thread, the student must support his or her assertions with at least 2 citations from the list of acceptable sources in current APA format. The citations in the thread must include the student’s chosen journal article and the Bible, which are required by the questions in the Discussion prompt. Each reply must incorporate the Bible and 1 scholarly citation in current APA format. Acceptable sources include scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles found within the Jerry Falwell Library and published within the last 10 years, course textbooks, and the Bible. The thread and replies must include appropriate in-text citations and all references listed at the bottom of the Discussion. All text must be free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Research Paper Assignments (4)

The student will write a research paper on trauma assessment and interventions in three stages within this course. In the Research Paper: Final Assignment, the student will combine the first three Research Paper Assignments into a final paper.

Research Paper: Assessment Assignment: This assignment will include a title page, a references page with at least 2 scholarly sources, and 1.5–2 pages (not including the title page and references page) covering an overview of crisis assessment based on information found within the James et al. (2025) course textbook. The student will follow the Research Paper Assessment Template for the paper’s structure. The student will select two areas of assessment that will be used as headings to create the two sections of the Research Paper: Assessment Assignment. The paper must describe/define both areas of assessment and show how a crisis counselor would conduct assessment for those areas. For each area of assessment, a formal inventory or scale that can be used to help assess that area of functioning must be included. No discussion of treatment or intervention may be included, since this will be addressed in a later assignment. The student must use the James et al. (2025) course textbook as a source, focusing on Chapter 3, and one other scholarly source, such as the Black and Flynn (2021) course textbook or a peer-reviewed journal article or academic book found within the Jerry Falwell Library. The paper must follow current APA formatting. Each section must be written in paragraph form (not an outline) and contain supporting details and/or examples from sources with in-text citations. All text must be free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. No abstract, introduction, or conclusion is needed for this assignment.

Research Paper: Skills for Specific Crises Assignment: This assignment will include a title page, a references page with at least 3 scholarly sources, and 1.5–2 pages (not including the title page and references page) presenting skills needed for 2 types of crises. The student will follow the Research Paper Skills for Specific Crises Template for the paper’s structure. The student will select two types of crises that will be used as headings to create the two sections of the Research Paper: Skills for Specific Crises Assignment. The paper must focus on at least two relevant counseling skills for a crisis worker to counsel effectively within each selected crisis. No discussion of treatment or intervention may be included, since this will be addressed in a later assignment. The student must use both course textbooks and one other scholarly source (peer-reviewed journal article or academic book found within the Jerry Falwell Library) as references. Only references used in this assignment may be included. The paper must follow current APA formatting. Each section must be written in paragraph form (not an outline) and contain relevant information and examples from sources with in-text citations. All text must be free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. No abstract, introduction, or conclusion is needed for this assignment.

Research Paper: Treatment and Interventions for Crises Assignment: This assignment will include a title page, a references page with at least 2 scholarly sources, and 1.5–2 pages (not including the title page and references page) presenting 2 treatments/interventions to use with clients in trauma or crisis. The student will follow the Research Paper Treatment and Interventions for Crises Template for the paper’s structure. The student will select two interventions that will be used as headings to create the two sections of the Research Paper: Treatment and Interventions for Crises Assignment. The interventions do not have to align with the crises chosen for the Research Paper: Skills for Specific Crises Assignment, but they may. The student must use one of the course textbooks and one other scholarly source (peer-reviewed journal article or academic book found within the Jerry Falwell Library) as references.

Research Paper: Final Assignment: For this assignment, the student will compile Research Paper: Assessment Assignment, Research Paper: Skills for Specific Crises Assignment, and Research Paper: Treatment and Interventions for Crises Assignment into one document after editing each assignment according to instructor feedback. The final document will include a title page, an introduction, Parts I–III, a Biblical Integration section, a conclusion, and a references page. The student will follow the Research Paper Final Template for the paper’s structure and section headings. This paper must be 5–7 pages of content, not including the title page and references page. The Biblical Integration section must be at least 1/2 page and include information about interpreting content through a Christian worldview, using Scripture as support. This assignment must include at least 5 sources, including all references used in previous Research Paper Assignments, both course textbooks, the Bible, and other scholarly sources (peer-reviewed journal articles or academic books found within the Jerry Falwell Library).
