COSC 694 School Counseling Internship II

Because experiential learning is vital to clinical skills development and the development of professional practice skills, an internship is required of all candidates seeking state licensure/certification as a professional school counselor. Jesus modeled with His disciples the value of a mentoring relationship. Following His example, both a university instructor and an on-site supervisor will mentor the intern over a two semester (Part I and Part II), 600-hour internship.

Method of Instruction: This 16-week course is delivered in a hybrid format, both online via Canvas®, a digital synchronous platform, as well as in-person training at a physical site. Students complete one module per week over the duration of the course. Students are required to meet face-to-face with their site supervisor on site as well as face-to-face via digital synchronous platform for weekly group supervision and instruction.

Virginia requires a one-time completion of the Dyslexia Awareness Training Module at the Virginia Department of Education which the internship student will be required to attach the certificate as a part of his/her School Counseling Portfolio in CORE (CompMS) for this course. (CLO: D, F, K)

Internship Culminating Project Proposal Assignment

The internship student will plan and implement one Culminating Project each semester of field experience (for a total of three projects to be uploaded into the School Counseling Portfolio.) Each project must align with identified Advanced Internship Assessment [AIA] Indicators found in their final assessment, as well as ASCA. The project must include supporting data/needs assessment and pre/post data collection to demonstrate competency in school counseling program evaluation and assessment. After the implementation of the project, the internship student will present a Power-Point of his/her project in class.

3. Internship 2: Internship Student’s Choice: Please choose to plan and implement a Small Group (topic choice will be determined at site) or plan and implement a Classroom Guidance Unit.

The internship student may NOT use prior assignments/topics to complete these projects. Projects will be checked for originality and plagiarism. Psychological First Aid (PFA): The internship student will complete training of Recognition of Mental Health Disorder and Behavioral Distress, including depression, trauma, violence, youth suicide, and substance abuse. Virginia requires a one-time completion of the Behavioral Guidelines: The Use of Seclusion and Restraint Training at the Virginia Department of Education website which the internship student will be required to attach the certificate as a part of his/her School Counseling Portfolio in CORE (CompMS) for this course. The internship student will collect signatures from his/her site supervisor to confirm that the internship student has the permission/consent to record the child/adolescent during a session. The internship student will have to submit a signed copy in Canvas and at his/her internship site. (CLO: D, K)

Taped Counseling Session Verbatim Transcript Assignment

The internship students will refer to the Verbatim Transcript Template for this assignment. The internship student will attach a file (PDF or Word) of a verbatim transcript of the counseling session and Kaltura link as an assignment. At the top of the transcript, the internship student will include his/her name for the purposes of grading. The internship student will use the template to identify who is speaking in the video, counseling skills demonstrated, and relevant self-reflective comments regarding the transcription. Title page, abstract, and reference section is not required for this template. The internship student will upload completed 20-minute session transcription. The internship student will have an opportunity to review and discuss his/her counseling session videos during his/her scheduled supervision with the Liberty Faculty Supervisor. The internship student will also complete a Clinical Skills Self-Assessment of his/her taped counseling session to increase personal and professional awareness and growth in the area of counseling skills. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K)

Internship Culminating Project PowerPoint Assignment

The internship student will complete a PowerPoint outlining the project that he/she implemented at his/her school site.

The internship student will upload a copy of his/her “Hands-On” CPR, AED, First Aid Training certificate. This training is required for Liberty University’s School Counseling program regardless of the state the intern resides/or plans to be licensed in. (CLO: D, E, J, K)

The internship student is required to review all internship forms with the school counseling site supervisor and submit forms according to the timeline noted in the Course Schedule. The internship student is to complete all forms and assessments in Canvas as well as CORE (CompMS), including the Cultural Competency Training. (CLO: D, K)

The internship student will begin working on the School Counseling Portfolio at the start of Internship Part I (COSC 699). The School Counseling Portfolio must be completed by the end of Internship Part II (COSC 694). The School Counseling Portfolio details the internship student’s experiences over the course of the school counseling program and field experiences to document “how” the internship student has met School Counselor Competencies: Advanced Internship Assessment [AIA]. The School Counseling Portfolio must be developed using the template in CORE (CompMS). The internship student is encouraged to review the School Counseling Portfolio grading rubric in CORE (CompMS) when creating his/her Portfolio. The internship student will complete sections of the School Counseling Portfolio during the course of the semester. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K)

The Field Experience Summary (FES) is partially submitted at the conclusion of COSC 698 (practicum). COSC 699 Internship 1 students will add Internship 1 hours and activities (minimum of 300 hours) to the FES and submit the form to Canvas and CORE (CompMS). Finally at the conclusion of COSC 694 Internship II, the internship student will complete the form by adding internship 2 hours and activities (minimum of 300 hours for a total of 600 hours or more), for a Culminating Field Experience Summary form of all hours and activities to upload to Canvas and CORE (CompMS) (CLO: D, K)

The internship student’s site supervisor must complete the Site Supervision & Evaluation of Candidate Performance (Advanced Internship Assessment) in CORE (ELMS) at the close of the internship course. In addition to the AIA, the site supervisor must sign off on all hours and activities served at the school site, and complete all assigned evaluations required in CORE (ELMS). Weekly Hours Logs

The internship student must sign into the CORE (ELMS) platform each module to document attendance and the hours served in his/her internship site for the module. At least 300 hours must be accrued in each semester of internship for a total of 600 clock hours. At least 120 hours of direct service with students must be accrued in each semester of internship for a total of 240 clock hours.

Participation in Group Supervision

The internship student must participate in an average of 1.5 hours per week of face-to-face group supervision facilitated by the faculty supervisor using a virtual synchronized component (the internship student’s faculty supervisor will provide the supervision link). Participation in all group supervision sessions is required for the successful completion of this course. Supervision is critical for evaluating the candidate’s mastery of the learning objectives for this course. Weekly supervision sessions will consist of teaching and meaningful discussion topics relevant to the school counseling setting.

1. The internship student must complete one Case Conceptualization & School Counseling Services Treatment Plan. The internship student must prepare to discuss his/her case and treatment plan during synchronized group supervision during his/her designated week. This form will also be submitted in the course assignment area.
2. The internship student must complete a Counselor Dispositions self-reflection assignment at the conclusion of the internship course. The Counselor Dispositions is also completed by the faculty supervisor as well as the site supervisor.

Site Supervision & Evaluation of Candidate Performance

The site supervisor must be a licensed school counselor with at least 3 years of experience and training in counselor supervision. Site supervisors verify their training and/or participate in an online counselor supervision training module provided by the School Counseling Practicum and Internship Field Experience Office. The internship student will complete the Information and Overview form with his/her site supervisor and upload this document to Canvas.

The internship student must participate in an average of 1 hour per module of supervision facilitated by the site supervisor. Supervision is critical for evaluating the internship student’s mastery of the learning objectives for this course. The site supervisor will evaluate the internship student twice during each semester (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation using the Advanced Internship Assessment [AIA] in CORE (ELMS)). The internship student’s site supervisor will receive an email from the CORE (ELMS) department with instructions, a user name, and a password to enter the CORE (ELMS) system and complete the AIA form. Site supervisors are also requested to go into CORE (ELMS) to verify the time log completed by the internship student. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K)
