Rationale
In the genre of epistolary literature, the general epistles represent a group of works that are frequently neglected, misunderstood, or even misused. This course is designed to help students engage this collection of letters in both an academic and devotional manner so that they are better equipped to study, teach, and minister using their contents.

Discussions (2)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. The thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate a comprehension of the corresponding course reading. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. Each reply must be at least 100 words. (CLOs: A & B)
Learning by Doing Assignments (3)
The student will complete three assignments that are based off of his/her reading from Letters of Grace and Beauty by Leland Ryken. The student must use the provided template for each assignment in order to successfully complete the particular evaluation of the format and features found in the General Letters. (CLO: C)
Scripture Study Assignments (2)
The student will complete two studies, Scripture Study: Hebrews – 1 Peter Assignment and Scripture Study: 2 Peter – Jude Assignment, on selected passages from the General Letters. The student will study the passage using the skills of Observation, Interpretation, and Application to engage the passage in a hermeneutically sound manner. A template is provided to walk the student through each step of this process. This template must be used. Additionally, the student must document all sources used (including textbooks) in the current Turabian format. The use of Internet sources requires the instructor’s prior approval since these are typically neither scholarly nor academic. (CLOs: A, B, & C)
General Letters Journal Assignment (7)
The purpose of the Journal Assignments is to reflect on the each of the General Epistles. For this guided reflection, the student will be using the qualities of Scripture given by Paul in 2 Timothy 3:16-17. The student will complete a journal assignment in each Module: Week while reading through the General Epistles. The student must use the provided journal template and use only the prompts given for each reflection. The provided templates must be thoroughly completed. Content recorded on each template must be typed out. Handwritten content will not be accepted and scored as a grade of “0.” Please remember that the primary focus of this reading assignment is on the Scriptures themselves (rather than commentaries and other Bible study tools). However, if textbooks or any other sources are used must be documented and properly cited. (CLOs: A, B, & C)
Quizzes (2)
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the module: week in which it is assigned, along with the preceding module: week or modules: weeks since any prior quizzes. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a time limit of 90 minutes. The student will be allowed 2 attempts, and the highest score will count toward his or her grade. (CLOs: A, B, & C)
