The Bible is the foundational source for our faith. In this time of increasing biblical illiteracy, students should be further motivated to know and study the Word of God. This course seeks to provide an overview of the historical books of the Old Testament in its context and application for today.


After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Course Overview.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will be required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. (CLOs: A, B, C)

Students will take two open book/open note quizzes to demonstrate an understanding of the historical books of the Old Testament. The quizzes based on course reading, will be a 50-question multiple choice test totaling 100 points each. The student must complete quizzes in one sitting in the allotted time given. (CLOs: A, B, C)

The first phase of a three-phrase project will be an overview of a historical book of the Old Testament. The student will choose a book and write an introduction and outline of the book, integrate major themes and figures, and provide substantial application for today. This paper will be 3 — 5 pages long and be worth 200 points. (CLOs: A, B, C)

This second phase of the Historical Books Project will expand upon the theme already developed in the first phase of this project. Students will analyze the theme both in the historical book chosen as well as throughout Scripture. The paper will conclude with an application section for believers today. This paper will be 2 — 4 pages and be worth 200 points. (CLOs: A, B, C)

Students will select one figure they have already identified from the first phase of this project. This last step of the Historical Book Project will further analyze a character from their selected book in his/her presentation in Scripture and apply the lessons from his/her life to believers today. This paper will be 2 — 4 pages and be worth 200 points. (CLOs: A, B, C)

Students will write a short reflection to reflect on the historical books of the Old Testament. They will assess why the historical books are important in the overall story of the Bible, how the historical books display God and his character, and include one item they were convicted of in the historical books. (CLOs: A, B, C)
