ARTS 571 Advanced Graphic Design
Course Description
Advanced Graphic Design integrates design principles and software, typography, digital illustration, digital imaging, page layout, and prepress techniques with emphasis on design process from visualization to production. Students will be responsible for the design and production of a fully integrated campaign consisting of major projects including several components across multiple media forms. Individual and collaborative work is expected including branding and packaging as well as prototyping for interactive media. Each student is responsible for production of design products, critiquing of designs, portfolio preparation and presentation. May be taken twice.

Rationale
Graphic design is communicating visually in an interesting and vital way. The successful graphic designer presents information in a manner that will conceptually and effectively communicate meaning across a variety of media. This course provides the student with an opportunity to strengthen design process, conceptual thinking, research analysis, aesthetics, and effective communication.

Discussions are a collaborative learning experience. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words and contain visual support where appropriate. The student must cite appropriate materials in current MLA format.

The student will develop and create a Poster Campaign addressing an issue. The student will complete this project in 4 parts.
For and Against Poster: Primary Stage Assignment
Stage 1 will involve research, planning, and initial sketches for the provided prompt. This will be displayed in a multi-page document.
For and Against Poster: Secondary Stage Assignment
The student will render his/her concepts on the computer and will create multiple iterations of each deliverable.
For and Against Poster: Final Stage Assignment
The Final Stage of the project will be the submission of all deliverables. PDFs of the original pieces will be submitted along with photographs of the physical pieces.
For and Against Poster: Process Book Assignment
The student will create a multi-page document that illustrates the life cycle of his/her project from research to the Final Stage, using the document made in Step One, the concepts and iterations from Stage Two, and the Final Stage. At the front of the book, the student will provide a brief introduction to the project. Throughout the remainder of the document, the student will include captions or descriptions of the thought and idea processes.
Intangible Packaging Project Assignments (3)
The student will develop and create original product packaging. The student will complete this project in 3 parts.
Intangible Packaging Project: Initial Stage Assignment

Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material for the assigned Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice questions, and have a 30-minute time limit.
