CMUS 357 Artist Development and Tour Management

An analysis of the various aspects of artist development and tour management. This includes contracts with venues, riders, audience projections/demographics, and finance (budgets, corporate sponsorships, gate receipts, etc.).

Those seeking to enter the music industry need to develop a broad background of insights regarding artists, their development, and the requirements of tour management. This course will introduce the student to the various aspects of artist development (identity, brand, team) as well as recording and touring.

Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning exercises. Therefore, the student will participate in 5 Discussions to engage with their peers on course materials and assignments. Prompts will be provided for each Discussion based on the content within the assigned Module: Week. The student will upload an initial thread of 300 words and a 75 word reply to one peer to emulate classroom discussion. Each thread must cite at least one scholarly source in Turabian format. Sources must have been published in the last five years.

Artist Branding Assignment

The student will investigate the brand of an artist of their choosing. The student will compose a report on brand uniqueness, consistency/inconsistency and success of the overall brand. The report must be a minimum of two pages in Turabian format and include a title page, bibliography, and at least two scholarly citations published within the last five years.

Technical Rider and Stage Plot Assignment

Students will create a technical rider and stage plot for a proposed venue.

Hospitality Rider Assignment

Students will create a 2-day (minimum) hospitality rider for their “team” to cover all required travel/accommodation requests.The rider should contain a minimum of ten requested items per day and a rationale document explaining the necessity of the items chosen.

Persuading an Artist Assignment

Students will compose a 4-6 page essay acting as the representative for a provided artist explaining why his/her client should/shouldn’t accept a proposed brand endorsement. The essay must be in Turabian format and include a title page, bibliography, and at least 3 scholarly citations from sources published within the last five years.

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain varying numbers of multiple choice, true/false, and essay questions, and have varying time limits and number of attempts.
