BIBL 400 Expositional Hermeneutics

Biblical exposition requires the student to interpret Bible passages in such a way that the application is made plain for the Christian. In BIBL 360, the student was introduced to the basics of biblical interpretation. In BIBL 375, the student was introduced to the basics in using the Logos Bible Software. Building on these prerequisites, this course is needed to help the student comprehend how to implement the use of resources in the Logos Bible Software in the application of hermeneutical principles with an eye towards biblical exposition in the context of church ministry.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. The thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate a comprehension of the corresponding course material, incorporating at least 2 scholarly sources into the initial thread. In addition to the initial thread, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. Each reply must be at least 200 words and incorporate at least 1 scholarly source. Turabian formatting must be used for each citation in both the initial thread and replies. (CLO: A, B, C)

Bible Passage Mini Project Assignments (4)

The student will use the Bible study tools and resources available in the Logos Bible Software to study a specified Bible passage. This will be accomplished over the course of 4 mini projects that will walk the student through the basic steps of Bible interpretation and exposition. In these mini projects, the student will put the principles of hermeneutics found in the course reading into practice. The student must follow the assignment instructions for each mini project. Each project requires a title page, bibliography, and resource citations in current Turabian formatting. (CLO: B, C)

Bible Passage Exposition Plan Assignment

Using sound expositional hermeneutical principles and the resources in the Logos Bible software, the student will construct a plan to teach, preach, or otherwise communicate a chosen Bible passage in a church setting. This expositional plan will be the result of the student having first studied the passage. Having accurately interpreted the meaning of the passage, the plan will strategize how that meaning can be effectively contextualized in the presentation for the church. The plan must consist of 7 sections and should be between 5-8 pages in length, not including the title page and bibliography. At least 3 scholarly sources must be incorporated and current Turabian formatting should be used throughout the assignment. (CLO: B, C)

Quizzes (4)

There will be 4 quizzes throughout the course. Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the Module: Week in which it is assigned, along with the material covered in all of the preceding modules. Each quiz is open-book/open-notes, contains up to 25 multiple-choice, true/false, and/or short essay questions, and each will have a 1-hour time limit. The student will be allowed 2 attempts, and the highest score will count toward his or her grade. (CLO: A, B, C)
