BCOU 310 Biblical Counseling and the Psychologies

This class explores various concepts of psychology and theories or approaches to counseling and their interaction with biblical counseling. This class will overview the various theories of psychology and counseling approaches and assess their compatibility with the Christian worldview along with assessing the use of various techniques found within other theoretical frameworks and their utility to be used by the biblical counselor.

The biblical counselor will be evaluated by other counselors and clients through the knowledge amassed within the larger world of psychology and counseling. The biblical counselor will need a level of competence of the wider world of psychology and counseling so as to be conversant with the literature and give a reasoned biblical appraisal of the various concepts and techniques utilized.

A Brief History of Soul Care Assignment

This assignment will overview the history of soul care, giving attention to major eras of church history, key thinkers, spiritual practices and the emergence of Christian counseling in recent history. The spiritual practices prior to the Christian counseling movement should be given special attention. (CLO: A, C)

Case Study Assignment

This assignment will challenge the student to both embrace a theoretical orientation toward a client and develop a treatment plan for the client. This assignment will pull together the learning from various content of the class to a practical and workable counseling approach. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Chart of Five Views of Christianity and Counseling Assignment

This assignment will develop a chart that gives an organized summary of the five counseling approaches presented in the class. This will serve as a simple simply of the various concepts presented in the class. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
