BCOU 300 Theological Basis for Biblical Counseling

This course provides the theological framework through which a biblical counselor analyzes the human person, the human struggle and moves toward resolution. Christian theology provides authority and guidance regarding the understanding of the human person, the reality of human sinfulness, the person and work of Jesus, the transformative work of the Holy Spirit, and many other aspects of Christian doctrine that are important to human transformation.

The field of counseling has many different philosophical approaches to understanding the nature of the human person and the possibility of human change. Biblical counseling embraces certain axiomatic realities about critical issues in the field of counseling that set clear parameters on what is appropriate and allowable within the field of biblical counseling.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 2 Discussions in this course. This will consist of an initial post of at least 400 words and at least two replies of at least 150 words to the other students. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

After reading another student’s position paper, write one reply of 300 words that states one area of agreement and one area of disagreement with the position that the student has taken. The student must use at least one scholarly source outside of the course text and the Bible. (CLO: A, D)

Biblical and Christian Counseling share both agreements and disagreements. The goal of this assignment is to complete the diagram in chart form on the agreements and disagreements of Biblical and Christian Counseling using a template. (CLO: A, D)

Common grace provides the basis for understanding how knowledge can be garnered by non-Christians within the Christian worldview. The goal of this paper is to describe the possibilities and limitations of common grace. This assignment should be 1,000 words and have two scholarly sources outside of the course text and the Bible. (CLO: B, C)

Theology should inform the practice of Biblical Counseling. The paper allows the student to state their position (with supporting research) on the role of theology in Biblical Counseling. This assignment will be 1,500 words and have three scholarly sources outside of course text and the Bible. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

There will be 8 quizzes in the class over the textbook reading. Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module: week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1-10 true/false, multiple-choice, or essay questions, and have a 40 minutes time limit. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
