Course Description
The value of qualitative research in understanding human behavior is examined with an emphasis on various qualitative methodologies and their theoretical foundations. Phenomenology, grounded theory, and case study are discussed.

Rationale
The purpose of this course is to develop an advanced understanding of the major concepts, applications, methodologies and practices in qualitative research. This course will take on a more applied approach addressing important findings of contemporary issues in psychology with the goal of moving students toward a dissertation topic and proposed research strategy. The course will also help students develop the skills necessary to understand and critique research in the field of psychology as well as propose innovative research ideas.

Discussions (2)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread of at least 750 words in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must respond and fully address the prompt, demonstrate course-related knowledge, and include at least three (3) scholarly citations in current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 300 words and must provide a critical analysis and substantive feedback. Each reply must contain at least one (1) scholarly citation in current APA format.
Benefits and Challenges of Qualitative Research Worksheet Assignment
The student will complete a worksheet to help understand the unique benefits that qualitative research provides. In contrast, in order to fully appreciate the utility of such research, the student will have to address the fundamental disadvantages of this type of research. Each answer must be answered in 3-5 sentences. Each item/answer must be supported with a citation from the material in the assigned Module: Week.
Millennials in the Workplace Research Project Assignments (2)
This project is focused on understanding and applying important concepts in qualitative research on an important contemporary topic. The student will watch a short video called Millennials in the Workplace by Simon Sinek, and then conduct qualitative analysis of the video and 100 comments. The Millennials in the Workplace: Research Paper Assignment must be 8–10 pages of content (not including title page, abstract, and reference page) with at least 5 peer-reviewed journal articles to introduce the paper.
This project will encompass two assignments:
- Millennials in the Workplace: Data Collection and Analysis Assignment
- Millennials in the Workplace: Research Paper Assignment
Throughout the term, the student will engage in the development, research, planning and writing of a Research Proposal. The following assignments provide a logical progression to accomplish this goal:
- Research Project: Part 1 – Literature Review Assignment (10 journal articles must be chosen.)
- Research Project: Part 2 – Proposal Development Assignment (Each question in the template must be answered with 3-5 sentences, with at least 5 peer-reviewed journal article references included.)
- Research Project: Part 3 – Proposal Methods Draft
- Research Project: Part 4 – Final Research Proposal (This is expected to be at least 25 pages, not including the title page, abstract, and reference pages, and contain at least 25 journal articles.)
Quizzes (8)
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the modules prior to its due date. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, will contain 25 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 1-hour-30-minute time limit.
