PSYC 307 Treatment and Recovery of Addictions

This course examines addiction recovery process theory and treatment modes. Students will understand the theoretical basis for treatment by critically assessing treatment outcome research from various approaches and formalize a practical recovery approach plan. Students will explore treatment approaches, gain a working understanding of addictions and begin to develop a practical approach to recovery. The dynamics of addiction recovery will be examined as students consider recovery obstacles for substance and sexual addiction subsets.

This course is designed to equip students with the theoretical basis of treatment and the ability to begin to develop a recovery plan for individuals with substance-related problems. In addition, students will examine sexual addiction and a recovery plan for this addiction. This course will also help them identify some of the obstacles involved in the treatment and recovery of addictions, including comorbidity and potential resistance to the treatment protocol.

Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will submit an original thread in answer to Discussion questions and reply to 2 classmates’ threads. The student’s original thread must be between 250 and 400 words; the 2 replies must be between 100 and 300 words each. The student must use his or her readings to support what they post in their original thread. The student should not post opinions, but educated answers to the questions that are based on the readings.

Replies of 100 to 300 words each to 2 other students should be used to enhance an educated discussion on the concepts addressed in the questions. The student should think of this as a classroom discussion addressing a very important issue. Students should use knowledge from the readings and videos to strengthen, support, and challenge each other in their thinking. Adhering to APA formatting guidelines for in-text citations and references is required. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G).

Community Awareness PowerPoint or Pamphlet Assignment

The student will choose to create either a PowerPoint or Pamphlet to discuss the prevalence of the topic and how it is treated in either the community or the prison system. The student must use at least 3 statistics regarding the topic and give at least 3 ideas for how community agencies can help with treatment. Any sources must be cited using current APA formatting and have been published within the last five years. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G).

Treatment Plan for a Dual Diagnosis Patient Assignment

The student will write a case study on a fictional client who suffers from some type of substance abuse, gambling, or sexual addiction. The student will use a provided template and the body of the paper must be 4–5 full pages in addition to the title page and reference page. The student must provide strong literature support using the course textbook, presentations, as well as outside academic sources. The paper and all additional components must be written in current APA format. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G).

Quizzes (3)

The student will take 3 open-note/open-book, multiple-choice and true/false quizzes over the module’s reading material. These quizzes consist of 40 questions, and the student will have 60 minutes to complete each quiz. Once the quiz is opened, it must be completed; it cannot be saved and resumed at a later time.
