Building off previous training on literature reviews, this course will help students conduct a review of literature that demonstrates readiness for a dissertation. 

This course will give the student an opportunity to develop his/her abilities to review, appraise and understand the health science literature and its clinical/practical relevance to the practice of healthcare.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete two discussions for this course. The student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250 words. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least one scholarly citation and one Biblical citation. Each reply must incorporate at least one scholarly citation. All aspects of the Discussion must be completed using current APA format.

The student must develop a relevant clinical question using a pre-defined question format (i.e., PICO=Patients, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes; PIO = Patients, Intervention, Outcomes). The student will submit a draft for review by the instructor. After receiving feedback, the student will correspond with the instructor via email or phone to finalize the clinical question. The student will then submit a revised clinical question approved by the instructor. The approved clinical question must be used for Critically Appraised Topic Paper Assignment.

The student will access the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) website and correctly answer at least 80% of the questions for each module. Once training is complete the student will submit a copy of the PDF report showing the completed coursework. The student should note that the IRB will not approve research proposals until CITI Training has been completed.

The student will appraise 3 articles using a standard criterion appraisal checklist provided by the instructor to critically appraise the structure, rigor, and overall quality of research studies. The student will use the article appraisal checklists found by accessing the website in the Learn section of the assigned Module: Week for the assignment. The assignment consists of two parts. The first part requires the student to create a 150 to 200 word abstract. The second part is an appraisal checklist the student will complete.

The student will complete a Critically Appraised Topic Assessment of the evidence retrieved and appraised for his/her approved clinical question using a required assessment template. The student must adhere to all format requirements outlined within the template. A Critically Appraised Topic Assessment submitted using a clinical question not approved by the instructor will receive “0” points. The assessment must include at least 3 articles providing a minimum of level 2 evidence and be relevant to the student’s approved clinical question. All 3 scholarly references included in the Critically Appraised Topic Assessments must be appraised using an appraisal tool provided by the instructor. The student must include a full-length version of each included article appraised as separate attachments. Full-length article should be uploaded in PDF format. A completed appraisal checklist for each article used is also required to be submitted for each article included in the paper.

The student will form a basic list of key peer-reviewed journal articles related to the review topic. The list must contain at least 5 references in current APA format and a 75-word annotation for each reference.
