HLTH 630 Principles of Community Health

This course provides an overview of public health issues as they relate to community health promotion and disease prevention. Theories and models relevant to community health programming as well as the connections between local, state, and national public health initiatives are presented. Emphasis is placed on acquisition of pertinent public health data to enable practical, applied, community-wide planning and cooperation among varied stakeholders.

This course sets the foundation for the other courses in the Health Promotion specialization for the MPH degree. A proper understanding of the role of the community within the context of public health provides the framework for evaluating health disparities and developing programs to solve the critical health issues.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 3 Discussions in this course. Each discussion will consist of a thread (at least 400 words) and at least 2 replies (at least 200 words each). The student must support their assertions with at least three scholarly citations in AMA format. Each reply must incorporate at least two scholarly citations in AMA format. The instructor is looking for substantial, thoughtful, and critical discussions. (CLO: A, B, &  D)

The student will identify research articles from the peer reviewed literature addressing a community health problem from Healthy People objectives or The Community Guide. The student will then write a 3-5-page summary of the content of the article and evaluate research methodologies. Additional sources may be needed to validate the main points of the article under review. (CLO: A, B, C, D, & E)

The student will explore a community-related health issue identified in the Healthy People objectives. The goal of this study is to go beyond the basic framework on the Healthy People internet sources and thoroughly research printed professional literature. For the Research Paper: Bibliography Assignment, students must write a statement in a few sentences to maximum a paragraph and produce a working bibliography of a minimum of 10 sources. The student will write a 15–20-page (with the abstract between 150 – 200 words) research paper for the Research Paper: Final Paper Assignment that must include a thorough discussion of the science behind the issue as well as the theory, political and policy challenges, and resources for meeting the objective. At least ten references must be included. (CLO: A, B, C, D, & E)

The student will take two quizzes during this course according to the instructor’s instructions and pertinent information in the corresponding modules. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 4 essay questions, and will have a 1-hour-30-minute time limit. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
