HLTH 624 Sanitation in Developing Countries

This course examines environmental hygiene and health problems related to water supply and sanitation. Low cost methods as well as appropriate technology applied to sanitation are discussed.

A hygiene environment is essential for healthy living. Proper sanitation and safe water are essential for an environment, especially in lesser economically developed countries. This course will give the student the basic knowledge and tools to address these fundamental water and sanitation issues for global settings.

Discussions (3)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. The student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion and reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each thread must be at least 400 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge, and include at least 1 scholarly source. Each reply must be at least 200 words. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)

Article Review Assignments (2)

The student will review the major points of an article. This is an individual assignment involving the review of the major points of a case study or article. The student is expected to provide suggestions to address the problem in the case study or article. The article review must be 450-600 words (excluding title or reference pages), use 1 peer-reviewed article, besides the assignment article or case study, to support the student’s opinion, and adhere to current AMA format. Case Study Assignments (2)

The student is required to respond to a topic provided by the course instructor. Both case studies should be 200–250 words and incorporate the required references in current AMA format (CLO: A, B, C)

WASH Program Assignments (4)

WASH Program: Topic Submission Assignment

The student will select a specific topic of the Research Paper. The topic selection will be submitted to the instructor for approval. The student will write a 1-sentence topic statement concerning his or her research paper topic. The student must provide one reference to validate the health problem in the chosen country/region. The student must also include some statistics from a reference to validate the magnitude of the problem.

WASH Program: Outline and Logic Model Assignment

The student will write a 1–2 page outline of research paper. This will be based on the health topic for the student’s selected country/region approved by his or her instructor.

WASH Program: Annotated Bibliography Assignment

The student will research at least 10 peer-reviewed, scholarly resources that are no more than 5 years old and write a brief summary of each source. The student will cite the resources in current AMA format.

WASH Program: Proposal Assignment

The student will write a 10–12-page research-based paper (excluding the reference and cover pages) in current AMA format that focuses on the previously approved topic. The paper must include at least 10 peer-reviewed, scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)

Quiz: Midterm

This quiz covers information from the first half of the course. It will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 2-hour time limit. (CLO: B, C, E)

Quiz: Final

This quiz covers information from the second half of the course. It will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 2-hour time limit. (CLO: B, C, E)
