EDMN 530 History and Philosophy of Christian Education

This course provides an overview of the history of Christian education. Emphasis will be given to education within church and other ministerial settings. Philosophical foundations impacting Christian education will also be considered from a biblical worldview perspective.

Too often, one’s philosophy of education lacks a strong understanding of both the historical and philosophical underpinnings of education. Christian educators need to learn to develop a philosophy of education that is informed by a biblical worldview perspective and tied to the deep historical roots of the Christian faith.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. The student will post one thread of 250-350 words and 2 replies of 150-200 words, with major points supported by lecture material, Scripture, examples, and/or thoughtful analysis where appropriate. This assignment allows the student to reflect on the reading within the course related to the historical foundations of Christian Leadership. Attention will be given to exemplars of Christian education throughout the historical study. The total assignment should be 600-750 words in length. (CLO: A, B)

This assignment allows the student the opportunity to study and critique existing philosophies of education. Attention will be given to the underlying assumptions of the philosophy, the nature of the teacher and the learner, and the goal of education. The total assignment should be 950-1250 words in length. (CLO: B, C)

This assignment assists the student in understanding how key individuals helped shape and influence Christian Education. The student is asked to interact with the unique contributions of an exemplar to the disciple of Christian Education, and also to interact with the impact the exemplar has had on the student’s life and ministry. The total assignment should be 1000-1250 words in length. (CLO: A)

This assignment assists the student with processing through the impact of a biblical worldview on Christian leadership and education. The student will create actions steps specific to their ministry setting. The total assignment should be 1,100-1,500 words in length. (CLO: B, C)

This assignment allows the student to complete an in-depth study of the historical and philosophical foundations of Christian Education. The student will identify, research, and evaluate a key historical figure, event, or philosophy that has shaped Christian Education. The body of the paper will be 8-10 pages with at least 12 footnotes across at least 7 sources. (CLO: A, B, C)

This assignment allows the student to focus on a personal philosophy of ministry. Attention will be given to multiple areas, including the nature and role of the teacher and learner, the purpose of the curriculum, and the ideal learning environment. The total assignment should be 900-1,350 words in length. (CLO: B, C)
