CHMN 350 Access and Inclusion in Church Ministry

The Bible shows God’s design for inclusion in the Church, but there are social and physical barriers that make inclusion difficult for people with disabilities and mental health diagnoses. In this course, the student will better understand these challenges and learn practical methods to overcome them, so that everyone has access to the gospel and a church family.

Discussions (8)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. The thread must be at least 50 words. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with quotes from the reading and video material from the class. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. (CLO: A, B, C)

Developing a Theology of Disability Assignment

The student will choose a passage of Scripture on the topic of disability and write a 3—5-page paper in current Turabian format on how that passage informs his/her theology of disability. The paper must include 3 references in addition to quotes from the textbooks and other course materials (CLO: A)

Disability Ministry Proposal Letter Assignment

The student will apply what he/she learned through the readings and videos to write a ministry proposal letter to a pastor. The letter will include a vision for the ministry as well as the biblical foundation and purpose of the ministry. Three biblical references are required. The proposal should be between 400–750 words. (CLO: A, B)

Characteristics of Successful Disability Ministry Leaders/Volunteers Assignment

The student will identify characteristics that are important for disability ministry leaders and volunteers to exhibit in a five-paragraph essay. The student must include biblical examples of the characteristics he/she chooses. (CLO: C)

Individualized Spiritual Plan Creation Assignment

The student will create church inclusion plans for fictitious children with common disabilities. The student must include spiritual goals, accommodations, and tools that will help the child. Each child’s plan should be at least 100 words. (CLO: C)

Service Opportunities for Adults with Disabilities Assignment

Outreach Event Planning Assignment

The student will create a slideshow presentation answering a series of questions to help them plan an outreach event to target special-needs families. The student must show his/her understanding of the importance of creating an inclusive event, advertising that event, and having a plan to follow up after the event. (CLO: B, C)

The student will recall what he/she has learned from the reading through two quizzes. The quizzes are open-book/open-note, may have multiple choice, T/F, short answer, and/or essay questions, and have a 60-minute time limit. (CLO: A, B)
