Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an M.A. and an M.Ed.?
A master of arts program is usually designed to cover specific graduate content needed for a specialized career or area of academic study. These courses can sometimes meet education requirements for licensure, but these programs are not designed for other licensure requirements.
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) is specifically designed to meet content area requirements for advanced and add-on licensure. This focus makes M.Ed. degrees especially useful for educators who want to change careers or branch out into new education content areas.
What can you do with an M.Ed.?
With advanced skills and knowledge in specialized areas of teaching and education, you can expand your options for new roles. This new expertise can help you shift to a new grade level, use your knowledge to help plan curriculum or meet state requirements for add-on licensure. With experience in teaching, Liberty’s M.Ed. degree can help teachers meet other state licensure requirements and grow into new teaching fields.
M.A.T. vs. M.Ed.
If you want to be a licensed teacher but have a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field, you will need to pursue initial licensure. Some states may have a bridge system that can help you begin teaching while you complete more education. However, the most effective path toward your goal may be to complete a licensure-track master’s degree.
Liberty’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree is designed to help you meet Virginia’s requirements for initial teaching licensure in elementary, middle grades, secondary, or special education. While Liberty’s M.Ed. degree provides tracks in these areas, these tracks assume that you already have met your needs for initial licensure and instead want to expand your current expertise. If you need initial licensure for teaching, see our Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
How can I know I am receiving a quality online education?
- Liberty University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), which means your degree will hold its worth as a valuable, respected credential.
Does this degree lead to licensure?
Our teacher education programs are approved by the Virginia Department of Education.
Liberty maintains strict compliance with all licensure requirements for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Not a Virginia resident? We want to help find the best program for you! To view educational requirements and whether a specific program aligns with the licensure requirements for your state, please review our licensure/certification requirements webpage.
