Course Description

An introductory course designed to develop practical conversational Spanish skills. Intended for students whose first language is not Spanish and/or have no previous Spanish training and/or experience.

Rationale

The increasing importance of the Spanish language in the United States and the growth of a global marketplace make the study of Spanish and foreign languages valuable. The goal of the Spanish program at Liberty University is for the student to engage this world effectively in Spanish and to grow in his/her appreciation of Hispanic cultures. This course recognizes the value of language study and assumes that the student is genuinely interested in learning to communicate more fluently in Spanish.

Rosetta Stone Assignments (4)

The student will work through Units 1–4 in Rosetta Stone. Each Rosetta Stone unit will have 5 lessons which the student will need to complete during the assigned module. Each unit will be graded as an average score from the core lessons and the milestone, plus participation in the in-between lessons, all of which assess student achievement during that unit. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Spanish Video Assignment

The student will complete the Spanish Video Assignment on a topic given by the instructor. (CLO: A, B, C)

Quizzes (9)

Students will complete a total of 9 quizzes:

Grammar Assessment Quizzes (4)

These quizzes will address certain learned vocabulary and/or grammatical concepts. Each quiz will contain 30-40 multiple-choice, true/false, and fill-in-the-blank questions and have a 45 minute to 1 hour time limit.

Quiz: To-Do List (1)

This is a list of required readings and procedures the student will carry out in order to be successful in the course. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 11 multiple-choice, true/false, and short answer questions, and have no time limit.

Quiz: Language Learning Expectations (1)

The student will describe his/her background, expectations and plans for learning a second language. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 essay questions, and have a 2 hour time limit. (CLO: F)

Quiz: Language Reflection (1)

The student will identity and reflect on his/her own language learning experiences. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 8 essay questions, and have a 2 hour time limit. (CLO: D)

Quiz: Practice Spanish Oral Interview (1)

Prior to the Spanish Oral Interview Quiz, the student will complete a practice quiz to get acquainted with the technology required in the Spanish Oral Interview quiz. This quiz will contain 3 video questions and have a 10 minute time limit.

Quiz: Spanish Oral Interview (1)

This quiz will require the student to answer a series of video questions in a video format without relying on notes or English to convey meaning. This quiz will contain 10 video questions and have a 30 minute time limit. (CLO: A, B, C)
