Course Description

Fundamental concepts of college algebra including sets, equations and inequalities, functions and graphs, polynomials, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear inequalities, and linear programming.

Rationale

MATH 121 provides fundamental math skills needed for further study in mathematics, science, and liberal arts. This course fosters university-level competencies in analytical reasoning and is part of the liberal arts foundation needed to pursue higher education in many fields. Also, understanding mathematics gives us a greater appreciation of God’s creative wisdom since it is, to a large extent, the language of His natural revelation.

Discussion (1)

The student will participate in 1 Discussion. Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for the discussion. The thread must be at least 350 words. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words (FSLO: CT 1, 2, 3).

Homework Assignments (6)

The student will complete six (6) homework assignments using WebAssign. A 70% or higher must be obtained on the homework assignment before the student may proceed to the quiz for those sections. (CLO: A,B,C,D,E ; FSLO: TSQR 1, 2, 3).

Quizzes (6)

The student will complete 6 quizzes using WebAssign. The student will be given 2 attempts at each quiz with only the higher score being counted. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes. Each quiz is timed and must be completed in a single sitting. (CLO: A,B,C,D,E ; FSLO: TSQR 1, 2, 3).

Exam Review Assignments (3)

Exam reviews will be similar to homework assignments. The student must complete the Exam Review in WebAssign with a score of at least 70% on the Review before he/she may take the corresponding exam. (CLO: A,B,C,D,E; FSLO: TSQR 1, 2, 3).

Exam Assignments (3)

The student will complete 3 exams using WebAssign. The student will be given 1 attempt at each test. Each test is timed and must be completed in a single sitting. You must submit all written work for each exam. Exams submitted without the accompanying work will not be accepted. (CLO: A,B,C,D,E; FSLO: TSQR 1, 2, 3).
