Course Description
This course will introduce students to the idea of aviation risk management. Course content includes discussions on aircraft systems, cross-country flying, elements of risk management, and automation.

Rationale
The purpose of this course is to provide new students with foundational tools that will help them to identify hazards and assess risks during flight operations.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student must submit a 2–3 minute video introduction within this course. The student may use a multi-media platform of choice to record his/her video. Specific elements stated within the discussion prompt must be included. The student must also reply to at least 2 classmates’ introductions. Each reply must contain at least 150 words, including a relevant and engaging question or follow-up response to guide the discussion. Further helpful hints and expectations are notated within the assignment instructions in Canvas.
Discussions (3)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be at least 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
VFR Scenario Essay Assignments (3)
The student will be given scenarios to read and analyze. The student should consider all variables of the given scenario (weather, pilot capability, etc.). A set of questions is given for each scenario that the student must answer. The student will answer the questions using the basic structure of an introduction, body, and a conclusion that summarizes relevant information. Each question must be responded to minimum of 5 sentences. For one of the assignments in particular, the VFR Scenario Essay: Dark and Stormy Night Assignment, the student must complete the Flight Risk Assessment Tool provided at the end of the document based on the given scenario in addition to the answering the required questions. Navigation Log with Risk Assessment Assignment
The student will complete a 6-page/slide presentation on a sample flight, including a complete risk assessment. The flight will be a one-way flight that will fit on a single navigation log. This assignment can be completed in the program of the student’s choice (PowerPoint, Word, etc.), and, for each of the required six pages, the student must refer to the assignment instructions and Navigation Log Sample document provided in the assignment page in Canvas to include all required information. The student will complete at least 250 words of comments and analysis on Page 6 of the assignment. No matter the chosen format, the student must submit the completed assignment as a PDF file. Quizzes (5)
Each quiz will cover Learn material from the modules. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain various numbers (9, 10, 30) of questions with various question types (multiple choice, matching, multiple answer, short answer, essay), allow for one attempt, and have a set time limit of 2 hours. Quiz: Safety Survey: Risk Management Training
The objective of this quiz is to help the student begin to consider his/her approach to safety. Some questions are worth more points than others. Full credit will be given to questions if answers contain good arguments, have strong flow of thought, and use proper grammar. The quiz will cover the Learn material from the assigned module: week, contain 4 essay questions, have a time limit of 2 hours 45 minutes, be open-book/open-notes, and allow for one attempt.
