Doctor of Nursing Practice Evidence-Based Practice Projects

by Sharon Kopis

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) prepared nurses are prepared at the highest level of clinical practice and systems leadership. They are uniquely qualified to lead innovations and evidence-based practice changes to improve patient care and healthcare systems outcomes. Based on the DNP Essentials, DNP graduates complete a DNP Project which affects patient and healthcare outcomes. Evidence-based Practice projects are completed in health care systems based on an identified “trigger” or area of need using the Iowa Model: Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) to Promote Excellence in Healthcare. During the past year, due to COVID restrictions, students completed either an EBP project or an integrative review. Evidence-based Practice projects provide students’ opportunities to lead a project to completion, often resulting in system adoption of a new patient care protocol, policy, or system change to improve quality, safety, cost, or efficiency. The Integrative Review findings often support the launch of an EBP project. A listing of 2021-2022 DNP graduates’ DNP Projects is provided. The vast array of topics illustrates application of the DNP Essentials to lead innovation and change in healthcare systems and patient care outcomes. DNP prepared nurses are shaping the future of nursing and healthcare.
