Liberty, University of Oregon to partner for service project ahead of Vrbo Fiesta Bowl

Liberty University and the University of Oregon are partnering with Valley of the Sun United Way to address child literacy in the Phoenix-Tempe community while the two programs participate in the buildup to the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

Students and senior leaders from both universities will stock book bags for the Book in a Bag project which will provide kids in Title 1 schools with a book inside of a bag decorated by volunteers.

“Liberty University is honored to participate in this year’s Fiesta Bowl service project and to partner with the University of Oregon to serve the greater Phoenix community,” said Liberty Executive Vice President for Student Affairs Mark Hine. “While the Liberty Flames certainly look forward to competing on the field on New Year’s Day, this service project provides an opportunity to demonstrate the value the Fiesta Bowl can bring to the community beyond football.”

The tradition of a joint service project during bowl season began nearly 10 years ago when Oregon was invited by another university to participate in the joint project, according to Kris Winter, vice president for Student Life at the University of Oregon.

“Since then, the University of Oregon has hosted several bowl game service projects and invited our opponents on the field to join us as we give back to our host community,” Winters added.
