Mike Pence, Pastor Greg Laurie, Priscilla Shirer among special guests for Fall Convocations

Liberty University’s Office of Spiritual Development has announced that the 48th Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence, is scheduled to speak on Sept. 14 during Convocation in the Vines Center.

This will be Pence’s third visit to Liberty. He spoke at Convocation in October 2016 as then-Indiana governor and Republican vice presidential candidate, and he returned in May 2019 to deliver the keynote address at Liberty’s 46th Commencement.

The announcement was made during Freshman and New Student Convocation on Friday morning in the Liberty Arena.

“I am excited to see this Fall Convocation schedule. Our student body, one of the largest on record, will be able to sample a wide array of Christian leaders who are modeling what it is to be a Champion for Christ in their field,” said Liberty Interim President Jerry Prevo. “My prayer is that our students will take Christ with them into their profession, wherever they are sent. Our Convo guests are just some of the many examples of what it is to serve Christ in all avenues of life.”

Other special guests this fall include Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, the first female Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth and the first Black female elected to statewide office (Oct. 5); Greg Laurie, senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship, and his wife, Cathe (Nov. 11); Christian media personality Priscilla Shirer (Oct. 14); pastors David Platt (Sept. 28), Jonathan Pokluda (Oct. 12), and Ben Stuart (Oct. 26); former NFL running back Shaun Alexander (Sept. 2); pro-life activist Abby Johnson (Sept. 9); and 16x Paralympic champion swimmer Jessica Long (Nov. 9). Guest music groups will include Shane & Shane (Sept. 28), the Sean Curran Band (Oct. 26), and Future of Forestry (Dec. 2).

The schedule officially kicks off on Aug. 24 with a special worship Convocation featuring guest singer-songwriter Micah Tyler. (See the full schedule below.)

“Our mission is to Train Champions for Christ at LU. Therefore, we want every Convocation speaker to be someone who can help fulfill this mission,” said Campus Pastor Jonathan Falwell. “Our guests this fall will bring great insight, wisdom, Biblical truth and encouragement to our students in their spiritual journey. We are excited to see what God does through the men and women who will share from the Convocation stage.”

Some of this fall’s Convocations will have special themes, such as a local church emphasis, featuring area pastors, and services focused on hymnology, commuter students, and the Advent season.

Convocation is the largest weekly gathering of Christian students in the world. The service is held every Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. EST in the Vines Center and is open to the entire student body. Most of the events are streamed live on Liberty’s main Facebook page and the Office of Spiritual Development Facebook page.
