University mourns loss of business student, prays in unity for his family and friends

During the March 10 Convocation, Liberty University presented a posthumous degree to the family of Keelan Banner, a junior business and human resources student who passed away on Saturday, March 6.

President Jerry Prevo and his wife, Carol, joined Banner’s mother, brother, and family friend onstage as Prevo offered his condolences on behalf of the entire university and presented the family with a framed diploma of Keelan’s associate of arts degree as well as a bouquet.

“This is a sad day for all of us here at Liberty University,” Prevo said. “Mrs. Banner, I want you to know that my wife and I want to express our sorrow for your loss at this time, and as president of Liberty University, I want to express for all of (Liberty) our condolences for your loss. We know that one day, as believers of Jesus Christ, that we’ll see each other again, and we’re so thankful for that. As you look at this (diploma), we know you’re going to remember your son … and when you look at it, we want it to remind you that Liberty University is praying for you. If we can do anything for you in the future, please let us know. Many of the folks here knew your son Keelan, and they will be praying for you also.”

Prevo then led the university family in prayer, including students gathered in the Center for Music and the Worship Arts and thousands watching online, before the Liberty Worship Collective led the students in singing Keelan’s favorite worship song, “Oceans.”

According to his obituary, the family held private memorial services.

Keelan’s name will be engraved on a brick at the campus memorial garden outside Montview Student Union.
