Liberty University to dispatch disaster relief team to Tulsa after historic flooding

Liberty University will send a team of students to Tulsa, Okla., next week as part of LU Send Now, the university’s disaster relief initiative.

The team leaves on Sunday and will partner with Samaritan’s Purse to help volunteers clean homes following devastating flooding to the area last month. They will also minister to families affected by the disaster.

In May, major storms in the Midwest caused heavy rains that flooded the Arkansas River and forced officials to open the Keystone Dam, which released millions of gallons of water into surrounding neighborhoods. It is the worst flooding seen in Tulsa since 1986.

“Many of our students and faculty might take a summer break from academics but they never stop ministering in moments of need,” said Senior Vice President for Spiritual Development David Nasser.

This is the fourth LU Send Now team to be dispatched so far in 2019. Most recently, a team went to Alabama in March following a series of deadly tornados, and another team flew to Nebraska in April to help residents recover from floods. LU Send Now has also deployed to California, North Carolina, Florida, and many other locations this past academic year for a total of 10 trips.
