Tower Theater performs musical adaptation of ‘Little Women’

Liberty University’s Department of Theatre Arts brought Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” to the Tower Theater last weekend, charming audience members of all ages. The musical adaptation, which will run through March 2, puts a contemporary spin on the timeless piece while still preserving the essence of Alcott’s novel.

“It’s different than the movie and different from the novel, but the heart of the story is still there,” director Chris Nelson said. “(The musical adaption) has contemporary-style music without sounding too contemporary. It really brings out the heart of Jo and the rest of the sisters.”

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s own life, the relevant, yet classic story has captured audiences for over a century. It is the tale of four sisters growing up in Civil War America who experience laughter, adventure, tragedy, and love. The main character is Jo March, a young woman striving to keep her family from changing as she chases her own dreams. Despite the hardships of the 1860s, Jo fights to keep her family together through the ups and downs of life, while maintaining her personal identity.

“I truly admire Jo’s determination,” said sophomore MaKenzie Mercer who plays Jo March. “She won’t stop pursuing her dreams until she achieves them. I also admire her dedication to family and the ones she loves.”

Though over 50 students are involved in the production, including cast, crew, and orchestra members, the show has the intimacy of a smaller show, Nelson said. The cast consists of about 20 young students.

This is the 12th show directed by Nelson.

“Every semester is different. Every year is different. Every show is different,” said Nelson. “It’s nice to tackle a different story every semester.”
